A momentous weekend

Whenever I get a new bike, I celebrate little milestones like my first 1000 miles, my longest ride, the first Strava KOM, etc. I'm still well short of my first 1000 miles, but in the last two days I racked up an impressive string of "achievements" on my V20, including my first crash, when I slid off the road trying to beat one of my PR's, followed by my first KOM an hour later. :cruzbike:

Yesterday, I followed up by having my first flat on the V20. Odd that changing an inner tube by the roadside takes five times as long as when doing it in my garage.

Having become separated from the others, who didn't bother to stick around and help me with repairs, I took a shortcut through an unfamiliar neighborhood and encountered what may be the steepest hill I've ever climbed. According to Strava, it almost imediately goes from a 0% slope at the bottom to 8.5%, and then quickly increases to 17.1%. By comparison, Sugarloaf Mountain is officially the steepest hill in Florida, with a max. slope of only 12.5%. My tires were near the end of their lifespan, and I was pushing the pedals so hard on the way up that my front tire would slip with every pedal stroke. An inspection revealed that the rubber had completely worn off in places, leaving patches of chord showing through. I had no option but to ride on that tire for 15 miles to get to the nearest bike shop, wondering whether I'd have a blowout along the way. A set of Hutchinson tubeless tires is on order, so hopefully this will have been my one and only flat on the V20.

Could you include a Google earth link to that Hill Climb, so I can send it to a DF rider friend who lives at Melbourne Beach FL, to see if he can climb it!!!
I KNOW I can't due to an overweight& underpowered engine!

Gosh. Message here is tubeless is great. Even if the tire deflates. The bead of a tubeless tire would stay on the rim for longer. After I had a slide the other year I did the changeover. Best thing I ever did.

Ah yes, Sugarloaf Mountain. I've climbed it many times but that was before I got into Cruzbikes.
I was a member of the Florida Freewheelers when I lived in Orlando and Sugarloaf was the featured climb on our annual Horrible Hundred ride.

As luck would have it, the Hutchinson tubeless tires were supposed to arrive a week ago but the shipment was delayed. If I'd had those, that whole incident would have been avoided. :(

I'm a Freewheelers member also, as were most of the others in my group. All the local riders try do Sugarloaf, if only for bragging rights. The thing about Sugarloaf though, is that I could climb it on my upright using less than 200 watts, whereas on the monster hill I encountered on Saturday, I had to average around 500 watts just to keep the V20 moving fast enough (8.5 mph) not to lose my balance. If there had been sand in the road, I probably would have crashed.

Melbourne is several hours from Clermonte, so I can't see the sense in driving all the way up here for that. The name of the Strava segment is "Cherry Lake Rd Hill". It's located in a residential neighborhood just North of Lake Minneola. If you do a segment search on Strava, you'll find it.

Need to get you FL folks up to Kentucky for the Redbud Ride featuring Tussy Hill that tops out at I believe 23%! Have done it many times on my trusty Ti framed DF. Will see how I fare on the S40!

My driveway tops out at 20%. Sometimes I make it up in my T50 and sometimes I don’t because the wheel slip keeps me from making it. If I lost 50 pounds, I might be able to go up the hill fast enough so that the wheel slip would matter less.

Does an S40 provide less wheel slip than a T50?

Have not ridden a T50 so can't compare. The steepest hill I've been up so far on my new S40 is about 18%. The hill is about 1/2 mile bottom to top averaging 12%. Only the last 75 yards or so hit max slope. At 10-12% I have no problem w FW slip. At 18% I have to concentrate very hard to use a smooth spin and steady front wheel or the slightest bit of gravel can be a problem. I'd guess about 3-4% difference between the CB and DFs. Of course at 18-20% I'm sucking wind pretty hard so it's just a rough approximation.

About 7mph. I run compact 34:50 with 11-36 in back. And I can assure you that on that part of that hill I'm using every bit of 34:36!

We have so few real hills here that I forget that I have a smaller gear. Shifting into the 34 instead of staying in the 50 might have made things a bit easier.
