Whenever I get a new bike, I celebrate little milestones like my first 1000 miles, my longest ride, the first Strava KOM, etc. I'm still well short of my first 1000 miles, but in the last two days I racked up an impressive string of "achievements" on my V20, including my first crash, when I slid off the road trying to beat one of my PR's, followed by my first KOM an hour later.
Yesterday, I followed up by having my first flat on the V20. Odd that changing an inner tube by the roadside takes five times as long as when doing it in my garage.
Having become separated from the others, who didn't bother to stick around and help me with repairs, I took a shortcut through an unfamiliar neighborhood and encountered what may be the steepest hill I've ever climbed. According to Strava, it almost imediately goes from a 0% slope at the bottom to 8.5%, and then quickly increases to 17.1%. By comparison, Sugarloaf Mountain is officially the steepest hill in Florida, with a max. slope of only 12.5%. My tires were near the end of their lifespan, and I was pushing the pedals so hard on the way up that my front tire would slip with every pedal stroke. An inspection revealed that the rubber had completely worn off in places, leaving patches of chord showing through. I had no option but to ride on that tire for 15 miles to get to the nearest bike shop, wondering whether I'd have a blowout along the way. A set of Hutchinson tubeless tires is on order, so hopefully this will have been my one and only flat on the V20.
