Another question about which bike to choose

Howdy Folks,

Been reading the site for....forever...well, a long time anyways. I'm a 56 yr old with back problems, I've ridden and built (from scratch) a few different recumbents. Now it's time to get one and keep it as I want to (and need to) ride again. I'm not a little guy, I'm at 255lbs, thats down 35 pounds in the last 6 months and I want more gone and for it to stay away. Here's what I've been looking at as my starter:
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Polaris-Scrambler-26-Mountain-Bike/11064947

http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_080W020613470001P?prdNo=5&blockNo=55&blockType=G55

http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_10104_080W123770110001P?prdNo=4&blockNo=4&blockType=G4

I've been looking for a low top bar, 26" tires (should I be checking 24" also)? I've found alot more but after a bit, they all start looking alike (Kmart, walmart, target). The bike weights are all within a few pounds of each other for the money I'm talking about spending. I'm going to look at a few used bikes this week, maybe find a better starter for the same money. Is a walmart mongoose better than a kmart huffy, or a target schwinn, meaning is there a name brand at these stores where one name is actually better than the others?

I'm not looking for this first cruzbike to last forever and ever or be a rocket or long distance rider. I want this to be fun, enjoyable and a good experience, so when the time comes to upgrade, it won't be a big deal to do so. The wife and I are talking about riding the trail along the American River, it's only 14 miles to Sacramento, and we both want to do it.

Suggestions, tips, anything you wanna tell me.

Thanks folks,
Mac
