Another seat mod

The recent post by Plazebo on the seat mod inspired me to work on an idea that I have been pondering for quite some time.

I am tall & have found the seat back to be uncomfortably short at times.
I picked up an old backpack & frame at a school fundraiser ($5) several months ago & with a little mucking about managed to figure out a way to mount it.

Got my wife to show me how to use the sewing machine.
The first mesh I used was some "pet proof" screen door mesh I had laying around; it lasted 2 rides before tearing. I found some much heavier mesh at the fabric store in the apolstry section. Much stronger. ($11)

The weight of the new back (Frame + supports + mesh, rods & lacing) = 1005 grams
The weight of the original (back + supports + pad) = 890 grams.
So about 115 grams (4 ounces) heavier.

The new seat back is currently more reclined than the original. No hard numbers but I percieve less wind resistance. (possibly faster?)
Unfortunately it has also changed my balance & I wobbled like a rookie when starting for the first while.

It also made the handle bars a little too far away so now I am expeimenting with new bar configuration. The bars are still a work in progress.

The seat back is taller & it is a bit harder to swing my leg over the back to mount & dismount the bike & now I usually "step through" to get on & off.

I shimmed the front of the seat pan up a little to counter the shallower seat back angle, I might need to shim a bit more yet.

The new back has more ventalation, lumbar support feels adequate, nice upper back support.
The starting wobbles are getting better, I think it is a keeper.

Now I just have to figure out a head rest.

That is pretty cool. What is the purpose of the silver perforated triangle under the seat?

Nice. Looks like the (back of the ) seat from my old Vision R40. That was a comfortable seat.

Does being further back change climbing steep hills?

I like this! I'm reminded of the famously comfortable Rans seats.

But if your weight is further back, what happens when climbing a steep hill? Does the front wheel unweight more, and then slip under load?

handlebar mods

Thanks vovolc, rrward & billyk, yes it is comfortable & cool.
There was only a slight rearward weight shift so no noticeable problem with wheel slip going up hills ... besides, I have more than enough weight to keep both wheels firmly anchored to the ground.

Romagjack, the handle bar mods are still a work in progress, I wouldn't recommend the setup shown in the pics. My attempt was to make a set of bullhorn bars similar to the ones I have seen on the Vendetta.

These bars are 23.8mm in diameter, I am learning that apparently most bars have a 22mm diameter, so most shifters & brakes do not fit on these bars. I managed to find an set of old friction shifters that juuuust fit, & a set of brake levers that are almost too loose.
I originally had the brakes on the bars near the shifters, but they were awkward to apply so I moved them to the middle as seen in the pic. In this position I would say they are borderline dangerous, moving your hands from the shifter to the brakes sometimes creates wild instability.

The shifters are pretty comfortable where they are, the only problem is that they are a pretty cheap set & the friction screw keeps coming loose.

Also, the curved part of the bar (closest to the seat) just does not have any comfortable place to rest my hands. Awkward.

Like I said, a work in progress.
