I went out for a ride on Saturday and my rear (non-drive) wheel started squeeking. So I cut the ride short and went home with only 58 miles. I wanted 100. So I took the wheel to the bike shop and ordered some new high-tech bearings (I didn't have time to fix it myself). It's a Mavic Ksyrium and is at least 10 years old. I've never had to true it even once and I was rougher on it than a wood chipper on a frozen prostitute. Then I went home, put on my spare wheel, and finished the century. I just picked it up after work and WOW! I held onto it at the axle and had the mechanic give the wheel a light spin. The darn thing kept on turning and turning. My old bearings were so bad the day they started squeeking that I couldn't get the wheel to turn at all after letting go. The mechanic said it should be a noticeable difference. So that's one more tweak for this speed freak! (Larry knows what I'm talking about.). I'm gonna throw some new bearings on the drive wheel soon too now since those bearings are probably ready for replacement also. It's a testament to Mavic that the wheels lasted over 10 years, many thousands of miles, even though badly abused, and never needed truing.
