Building my new Silvio, need your bragging help

I've completely fallen in love with my Silvio 1.5, so of course, I'm upgrading.

Here's the spec we've got so far, but I need your advice. What bang-for-the-buck choices am I missing? Are disk brakes worth it? Is SRAM the brand to go with for most of this? PS I find the ratchet noise on my existing Silvio wheel pretty annoying.

I'm a 30 miles at a time rider, don't want flats, I'm not going to race, but I sure like feeling like the bike is working with me, not against me. 140 pounds, 5' 7.6".

I'm fascinated by all the stuff you guys are playing with, interested in electric shifters or cool wheels from eBay, etc.

So, have at it. What would you consider adding or replacing?

Parts is Parts... sometimes

I can give you some insights from the build I have been planning for 6 months (just waiting for USPS to deliver the frame, man they are slow).

  • Skip the Force Brakes Calipers; and go Rival the weight different is tiny; use the money elsewhere.
  • Consider the Rival Crake versus the Force crank more size options less cost. Weight is negligible.
  • Rival Crank will include the BB
  • Consider a compact BCD for the crank if you are going with a 50/34
  • Force Brifters great; get 2013 ZERO LOSS version probably new from amazon best source
  • You might not need the long cage RD; if you go with a Wipfli cassette 11-32 you can use a Wipfli deraleur and have a short tighter chain line;
  • If you do not like noise get a KMC X10sl 116 link 10speed chain; lighter than the SRAM 1091 hollow pin and runs quieter (not to mention you can get colors)
  • FD consider the newest RED or FORCE with YAW; no trimming required to cross chain.
  • Jagwire Road Elite LINK cabling for tighter cable turns, and cool colors.
  • Road Tubeless wheels - Bontrager good for normal people, lots of TT bikes ship with them. TT jocks replace them with disc wheels and often sell unriden bontragers on ebay; I got 4 total for 60% of list.
As soon as the the frame gets here, I am going to do my build; with a photo journal and a Bill of Materials; that will be over at BROL to see if I can generate some buzz around the Silvio in the new MBB/FWD forum.

I will leave the Electric and Hydrolics for next years V3 build. We know Johns gonna just make us hate the v2 with his next interation right?

go with carbon rims

I got custom carbon rims from China via Ebay for $450 shipped, very light, went with tubular rims and disk. Gatorskin tires mounted with Tufo tape (=5 minutes) and added Stan's sealant.
The Force 2014 Yaw FD is identical to the Red FD but costs half.

Good list

That is a good list that will get you rolling quite nicely. I agree with ratz on a lot of his suggestions on chain etc.

Disc brakes are going on my Silvio build. Note - I believe the rear requires 140mm for the install. 160mm up front. If I am incorrect here please correct me. Disc brake hubs in 130mm with are not easy to come by. As in not at all. The DT Swiss 350 disc hub can be made 130mm from 135mm with some ninja slight of hand and a cap change. It is also a much quieter hub than some. Loud hubs make me prazy personally like the quieter ones.

For most components today the higher the cost the less weight, but gains in actual performance are getting smaller and smaller as todays "SRAM Red" becomes tomorrows more mid level component set. (IMHO of course) Rim brakes can be a different story and it always seems some work better than others and not always correlated with "more expensive is better." Here going with something that really works well is important.

I would agree that the long cage may not be needed. A SRAM X9 Type 2 with a medium cage would be very nice and can handle 36T cassette - the "lockout" feature on the cage can come in handy for wheel removal. It is a MTN unit though - so you would need to add an inline barrel adjuster.

Yes KMC over Wipperman

KMC 10XSL is quieter with all lubes; the Wipperman is the only quite with wet lubes something link Prolink. It is been that way since at least 2006. I put a SRAM1091 on my CT700 for a compartive test; as soon as it wears out I am putting a KMC on it.

Eletronic shifting

Hi Seth,
Maria and I have had the most experience with 20-speed SRAM Force and Rival groupsets, and they are light and work very well. However, the bike I am riding the most right now is a Vendetta with Shimano Ultegra Di2 electronic shifting. I love the flawless shifting. Just push a button and it shifts. If you change the drive wheel or cassette, it has an auto-tune feature. My battery is mounted outside the boom. We had one of these built up for Maria with the battery hidden inside the boom, but that was one of the bikes that was destroyed during RAAM. She loved it for the brief time she had it. I'm not sure if the internal battery will fit inside the Silvio boom, which is a bit narrower than the VN.

The ratchet/pawl clicking sound when coasting is normal. Some like it, some don't. If you ride in a group, it let's everyone know that you are coasting. Ask your mechanic to take the hub apart and grease the ratchet/pawl. This should lessen or eliminate the clicking.

Sram Force is awesome gear.

Sram Force is awesome gear. Love mine. I can't imagine needing better brakes that Force rim brakes.
There are a lot of good wheels out there. I went with Mavic Ksyrium Elites after putting over 5,000 miles on a 650 set. Bombproof. I once hit a large pothole at 25 mph. Didn't even knock them out of true. The Cruzbike wheels look to be a really good set of wheels at a great price.
