Bummer

I rushed home tonight to take a look at my bike in an effort to help Jamie(Brewmaster) out. First, I noticed my front tire was flat. While that was not big deal, I noticed a weird sound in my rear wheel. After I fixed the flat, I took the rear wheel out. The sound was inside the rim. It sounded like a piece of metal floating around in there. I took the tire and tube off and peeled enough of the rim tape up so I could expose a spoke hole, then rotated it around until the thing came out. Not sure what it was, circular, maybe part of an eyelet. Anyway, while messing with it, I noticed that the hub was a little loose. I pulled it apart and discovered it needs lots of help. Bearings were rough, cones look pretty chewed. I would consider new cones and bearings, but that piece of metal from the inside of the rim bothers me.... Might be time for new wheels. These wheels have tons of miles on them, it could be time.

Bummer.

if that was a popped nipple, then a rebuild of the wheel would do it, no?

I've got no loose spokes, let alone broken ones, so I don't know... I could be a piece of flashing from the manufacture of the wheel, or something that broke loose. I hate that rim, though, so the idea of replacing it is not killing me in that regard. It's one of those rims that no tire actually fits on..... You have to fight and scream to get the bead off and darned near bloody your hands to get it back on.

My front wheel is fine. It's a sealed bearing unit. I have no clue why Campy went cup and cone on the front (actually, our rear) hub, except to save money, I guess.

Current financial conditions say if I do anything, it will be a rebuild.

Amen, hate those. I had to soak a set of GP4000s in the bathtub for half-hour to get 'em on the BROL bike Campy wheels. And go to church and apologize afterwards...

Chucksbikes is going out of business, I snagged a set of xero X-1 campys for $168, but I don't see it listed now (which means I might have gotten the last set? not comforting) They have some Velocity Urials listed...

and FSA RD-88's for $165 and then 30% off...

Good luck.

Thanks, Doug. Yeah, I scoured Chucks site and looked over e-bay. Problem is $$$ right now. You know, this stuff never happens when you're flush, right? ;)

I'll just rebuild, for now and when I get a little cash on hand, I'll pop for a set. I'll probably have a set built. I'm kind of an old-school guy. I like a 32 spoke hand-built wheel. Lots of strength for a large load and if you do break a spoke, you can still limp it home.
