Change from 1x11 to 2x11

I’m thinking of changing to 2x11 on my Q45. What is the best way to accomplish this? Two piece or thee piece crankset?

I simply replaced the bash guard ring with a 48T chainring, and adjusted the derailleur to give the chain a little more slack. The original 38T ring is still there in case of mountains but have never used it despite living on a steep hill.

How is the chain centered after just adding another ring? You haven't changed the chain length, does it work with the biggest sprocket on the cassette? You don't use a front derailleur?

My Q45 is still on the way to me but already loking for options to speed it up on the downhills, a have them a lot on my commute, makes it easier with traffic. Bt will try the stock setup first, maybe 40km/h will be enough... Can't wait for it to arrive :)

I tend to ride on the small sprockets so for my purposes the chain is actually better centered on the outer chainwheel. It would be tight on the largest sprocket if I ever had a reason to shift down that far. No derailleur for the same reason. It's pretty easy to kick the chain onto the original 38T, but haven't had any need, even on hilly interstate rides.

The rear derailleur on the Q45 is for 1x 11. In the outer chainring the chain comes off as you move up to the larger gears. It works good in the small gears. Mounting the outer chainring where the bash guard was worked great. I have someone putting on the front and rear derailleur. I’ll update in a week or so.

Nicely done! So you just changed the bash guard with a larger chainring? The smaller chainring is still 38T?

I’m using 52/36. See earlier post. To work properly change the rear derailleur from 1x to 2x. Also Front derailleur was added . I’m not a fast rider but enjoy 15- 40 mile rides. I wish I would have done this sooner. No more 1x’s for me.
