changing front chain ring

I would like to change the chain ring on my freerider v1 from a 44t to a 38 t but the bike store says they can not match the ring and I would have to go to a 170 mm crank arm to do so. What about this; and has anyone gone to the 170 mm crank arms? Any help suggestions would be appreciated.

I switched to 170mm cranks on my Sofrider.
As you know, the handlebars differ between the Freerider and the Sofrider.
I had to readjust the handlebar, the length of the boom and the angle of the stem (part that the handlebar bolts to),
to clear my knees.
You may or may not have to adjust your handlebar position to clear your knees,
but you'll certainly have to adjust the boom, to accommodate the longer crank arms.
As you know, this is not a problem on a Cruzbike.

droping to a 38 ring will reduce your gearing by 1-38/44.

increasing to 170 cranks will reduce your gearing by 1-155/170

the short cranks are an important part of the feel of the ride, there must be other alternatives out there for a square taper bottom bracket.
