Cool design

I found out about the Cruzbike a few months ago - right after I bought myself a new DeVinci for my 30 miles commute. I like the Cruzbike concept very much for a number of reasons - primarily the more comfortable position and potentially less strain on the heart. I wish I knew about it before the purchase - I would have gone for a conversion kit all the way.
Anyway, the reason I'm posting is because I just found this concept bike

When I try to commercialise a design, I like to identify first:
a proven handling geometry
a proven gearing system
a proven steering system
a proven ergonomic connection between the body and the bicycle
a construction method that takes advantage of industry experience
adoption of standard components.

It is a shame this sketch has none of those pre-requisites. It really is about as helpful as the book my son has that explains all the star wars technologies.

Looks Cool....

But as any engineer knows there is a long way from concept to commercial product. However concepts can be a a long distance aim that commercial products can move towards step by step.

However sometimes the concept can get in the way of the development of a real product.

I always like to look at the details of the concept to see any good idea's and the overall feel to see if there is any thing to learn. The lower cranks on the concept is something that the quest has featured. Under seat steering has been talked about before on this forum - but it something that keeps coming up as something people want even if its not the most functional design.

Hub less wheel seem to be this year trend - I think we are a long way from getting this working as well as a conventional wheel!!!

I guess if you've got nothing but time and a 3 dimensional cad program this is what someone could design. However if we needed a reasonably well designed and functional prototype in the next century you'd be a little pressed for time. That's just my opinion. Instead of seeing a model developed from a cad program I much prefer one developed from applied prototypes and applications then maybe rendered as a cad. In other words this Cad is too far away from real world applied practical applications. If I saw one of these functional in the next couple of years I'd have to eat my words but I would never pay the money it will cost. LOL

Hey Buyagain.. Ya know what would be really cool is this bike with your 4 stroker on the back wheel... Wadayathink? :p By the way , I've been having lots of fun on my E cruz lately .. how are your bikes working out ? I posted some pix in the Kit conversion brag board, assist thread the other day , If interested.. Bill

Just take the wheels. A good set of wheel today can be had for $350 at a weight of 1.5kg, and are built of aero quality alloy. One would need carbon and titanium to get anywhere near adequate strength and commensurate weight with this rim connected concept for a wheel. And it would still miss be way outside those targets. Its not an instructive vision of the future, it is a juvenile fantasy. Oh ... did that come across a little strong?

Cool for a chopper (custom motorcycle)!

Those wheels and their bearings would be very heavy.
Stylish, but heavy.
High style sometimes translates as low utility....

The frame geometry reminds me of a python?
Flevobike?

It (this design) does nothing for me, sorry.
Just my opinion, folks!

Is it just me or does this look like a center ring circus attraction? Why would I think that?

I'm not an engineer and I see all kinds of issues...but it might would win some sort of design award in a school. Unless part of the criteria is practicality/reality of construction, in which case.... :?
