Cracked Carbon Wheel

I currently have 50/34 front and 11/40 in the back. How many chain links do I need to add to change to 52t ring? Thanks.

Ok so for an unsuspended steed

L=2(c)+(f/4+r/4+1) simple

1+0.25x(f+r)+2 x square root c x c + 0.0796 x (f - r) squared. More complex.

Equations from park tools. You need to be a parked tool to use them.

Opinion follows.

Or as I prefer put chain on small to small yes I have some spring tension rear mech.
So that rear mech is not totally in rest position.Tick

Then chain big to big yes the rear mech is not totally distended extended and jockey wheels still turn. Tick.

Alright I’m all good to go. (Though cross chaining is never ever recommended unless you have one of those new fangled elect a tronic money sinkhole dizzy thangs.)

Unless there is the complication of rear suspension............. of course lol.

So I would simply try the 52 and see if you can get to big big.

If you can’t no problem do what I do with the 53 to 40. Don’t use it and remember to not ever ever try.

Adding a few links means another pin or quick link. I don’t bother. See big hill on that bike think 39 to 40 and practice the tight rope walk. Vendetta balance horizontal boom. Lol. Means walking for me.

:cruzbike: +1 @jond common sense solution

Parked tool :emoji_hammer_pick: = (or is that a rubber mallet?:D) that's me - Applies to current location on couch and to only-use-the-tools-if-I-can't-help-it
Cross chaining = :emoji_cross::emoji_pray::emoji_prayer_beads:making the sign of the cross while shifting and praying nothing breaks because you didn't check it beforehand and it is questionable practice anyway but you forgot to shift ahead and now it is too late as you realize it mid-shift.
Guestimating: Changing from 50 to 52 means the front 1/2 of the chainring with chain on it goes from 25 to 26 so one link. The difference in chain length caused by the change in diameter of chain rings will cause a small % increase in chain length, so 1.1 links should be enough. If your rear derailleur is not horizontal you should probably be fine, maybe not ideal, but plenty fine to test and try it out. By the time you want ideal at those higher speeds you will have worn out your chain anyway and can buy a longer one. :cruzbike:

As always, please correct :emoji_heavy_check_mark::emoji_x:me if I am wrong and if you are good with diagrams feel free to draw a picture. :emoji_paintbrush:

O
Is it ok to have 2 or 3 quick links connecting each other?

Only if they are through your ear lobe or in a breeding trial.

But seriously a chain is as strong as it’s weakest link. It would work but why would you . You desire an homogeneous chain so space your quicklinks lest they start their own breeding program.

I think I saw a $600 chain on the net once made of 112 x ten speed quick links. There’s always one.......

For a final evaluation and comparison, I completed the 31 mi loop that I have ridden 100's of times previously. The combination of the Ventisit seat pad, 28mm tires, and I assume the FLO wheels give a near comparable ride to the Silvio 1.0 that I rode for many years. Performance-wise, the S-40 is without a doubt a much faster machine despite the aging the motor. :emoji_older_man:

Now I could only find a way to keep my 25oz CamelBak water bottles from self-ejecting from their cages while cruising down the road, I would be set.

Use any bottle but camelbak and you'll be half way to solving that problem. I love the camelbak bottles but don't have the needed shape to lock into a cage, the neck doesn't reduce enough. The other half of the answer is using X-lab gorilla cages.

Those cages will help you ride your unicorn faster too due to carbon fibre flame throwing rear intimidation factor as you ride in front of the pack.

-I couldn't resist.:D

Yes same issue. I solved it by fitting a red flash lezyne zecto with the rubber flex retention strap wrapped partly round the cage. The impingement and reduction of cage space means no flying bottles. I don’t pull bottles use hose n retractable lanyard.

Plus 1 on rojo. It is only camel backs buckin the system.

Your bike is ace looking. Enjoy.

I appreciate the advice. I am currently using LEZYNE side load cages. On my 1.0, I added a zip tie loop to my carbon cages, which was fine for that configuration. However, it defeats the purpose of a side load, which is needed for a 40.

Well, the HED replacement wheels finally arrived today, Jet-6 Plus. Nice looking, but I am quite pleased with the FLOs. For now, the HEDs will remain in the box as a spare should I have another incident.:mad:
