Cruzbike Quest 2.0 559 Replacement Headset

Hi,

Recently I bought a Quest 2.0 in really good condition, it has been sat in a garage for 10+ Years with no use.

The reason it has not been used is the headset bearings are all over the place and no matter what I try cannot get them tight.
I strongely suspect missing/incorrect parts and would like to replace the headset for a sealed bearing type.

Anyone changed the headset on a Quest 2.0 and what headsets do you recommend?
The fork is 1 1/8" but don't know the frame size.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I assume that is has the "DiaTech" headset on it? If so - that is a wear item for sure and that headset is no longer made to my knowledge.

Any standard headset (EC34) will work, but you will likely want to get as short of a stack as possible, as the steer tubes on the older bikes were fabulously short. See how much steer tube you have sticking up and outside of the headset, as that will determine what is possible.

The reason is that changing to a "regular" headset from the Diatech means you now need a this headset adjusting spacer, which will add stack height, and possibly leave you without enough steer tube to properly clamp to.

If possible can you post a pic of the steer tube that is coming out of the top?

Yes.
It is the dreaded DiaTech headset., with all the original components (lucky me).
Searching these forums I have found Problem Solvers Micro ADJ Headset Spacer, can replace the adjustment cone.

Now for a suitable EC34 headset.
Here are some lovely piccies.

Turns out the Problem Solvers Micro ADJ Headset Spacer was a terrible idea, didnt work.

I ended up putting a long 6mm extension bolt through the handlebar/steerer tube/front suspension nut, and making it adjust 'like a normal' bike with a allen key adjustment in the centre of the handlebar. Works great.
Used 6mm threaded rod (cut to length), 6mm connectors and a 6mm bolt.

Didnt need to replace the orginal headset cups, just fitted two 30mm/41mm sealed bearings and a Hope 07 Upper Taper Ring - Silver - HS124S.

DiaTech stuff is now in the bin.
All done and works good.

Now for some minor improvents like replace the forks/wheels/brakes.
