I've just thought about how these lights could be useful for anyone (not just commuters like myself).

First - these are great rear/side lights
* rear view
* Side view
* multiple modes of flashing/spinning/
* very bright
* rechargeable
What isn't obvious is that they (usually)
* include magnetic fixtures
* are waterproof
* can last a really long time (some claim 36 hours)
* are technically road-service lights
* can operate while they are plugged in and come with a car adaptor
So...they WOULD work for the back/sides/top of follow-vehicles on ultra-events very well.
And they are pretty cheap.
The only one's I've used personally are these.
