Electric conversion

Fellow CBers. I have a decision to make and I am looking for opinions.

My goal is to have an electric commuter Cruzbike. I would like drop handlebars and brifters. The electric bike conversion kit has a battery which is 15x6x4 inches. I would like to run 650b wheels with 1.5" tires.

Option 1: Retain my Qx100. Add the eBike conversion kit. Switch out the handle bars and brakes etc. Put the battery either on the rack or in a scarab bag.

Option 2: Sell the Qx100 and buy a Q45 bike or Q45 frame and mod that per option 1 but put the battery on pannier on easy rider rack

Option 3: Sell the QX100 buy an S40 frame and build up the S40 as a commuter.

Which option would you prefer?

Will 1.5" tires on the S40 handle the occasional pot hole?

Thanks in anticipation.

In thought; expanding the paradigm of traversity
S40... when you stop commuting, you can use it as a race bike.

It has a higher resale value too as demand for it is higher than your other options.

You can use it off road with bigger tires so you can have more fun.
:D:rolleyes:

You can fit 700c x 32 with fenders or 700c x 38 without fenders on S40, and I have both. Someone has fitted 650b x 42 with fenders on his S40.

Well, here is my S40 commuter.
650b x 42 tires with fenders, and the battery is just under 15" x 4" x 4" (from LunaCycle).
The battery bracket mounts directly to two rack bosses on the frame. Swap to a standard wheel and remove the battery in less than 5 minutes when you want to ride without it.

Excellence bill k that is impressive and versatile.

Can you comment on range/system/speeds/charge time. Does the battery location impede you in any way. I’m headed towards e assist and it’s great to get firsthand experiences.

Here are some details:
Bafang mg-311 hub motor, rated at 250 watts, but the controller feeds it much more than that (over 600 watts).
Grinfineon ca-4820 controller (from ebikes.ca in Canada) controlled by throttle (no cadence or BB torque sensor).
Battery 52 volt 13.5 amp-hour, Luna "shark pack"
Total weight: 17#.
My round trip commute to work is 30 miles and about 1300 ft of climbing. When I get home the battery is about 50% discharged (I do not need to charge the battery at work).
I usually ride very easy and only put 100-130 watts into the pedals (measured by a Stages power meter) and I am usually cruising at 20mph or so. I very seldom use full throttle and on the flats I hardly use the throttle at all.
The battery takes 3 or 4 hours to charge. I usually charge it to 80% to increase its life. There are high-power chargers that charge faster but since I charge it overnight I do not need one.
I like the battery location. It works well, does not cause any balance issues, and is easy to remove it for charging.
The biggest problem is the 17#. That plus work clothes plus the S40 puts the total around 50#. You don't want to carry this up any stairs.

Excellent thankyou bill. I’ll check it out thank you.

Yes adding weight is hard to do lol. Battery tech is moving very fast so lighter is around the corner.

Nice ride Bill K. Innovative battery location. Thanks for all the detail about your power usage and battery charging routine.

It seems like you have created a great solution for a long commute.

Very good example to follow.

Lol slim. Mate you have passed e assist and are onto g assist.

Geriatric assist. ;) sadly you don’t have any realisation of such as a walking south Australian zombie in z assist.

How are the incontinence nappies working out on the silvio. No more accidents I hope. Even a ventisit pad can only take so much liquid south Aussie.

Be careful David I still have your phone number.

I am on my way to e assist merely to demonstrate its fundamentals to my ever patiently loving beautiful wife.

Turning 58 and my FTP is still 280 watts at now an increased weight 86 kg up from 81. Darn those nappies and their absorbing qualities. :)

Is their a south Aussie team in the finals.

Ps I’m a manly supporter. Go the sea eagles.

So 68 is close to 70 years OLD!!!!

280 watts, with 250 by the electric motor!!!
So ONLY 30 watts from yourself!!! That's not very good!!!

You must have special nappies to handle ALL that the bullshit that you produce!!!

Crows and Port were 10, 11th in the AFL Ladder, and the Sydney Swans were 15th, out of 18 teams!!!

I succeeded then!!! A laugh a Day keeps the Doctor away!!!

Being a descendant of Free Australian Settlers of South Australia, instead of a Convict settler of NSW, I do not understand what the GWS acronym is, as it must be Convict code?????

GWS greater western Sydney the giants. Still in the afl finals I think. It will be news next year on the bush telegraph south Australian styled communication pole. Yep if you can’t smile and ride a recumbent then .......... you’re already in a south Aussie nursing home.

I hope GWS win, as it is a NON Victorian team !!!

Our Bush Telegraph has been replaced by Fibre optics with repeater stations every 25 km, and the newer cables every 50 km!
NSW and Queensland are still using Smoke signals, that have got away from them, and created a LOT of small bush fires!!!!

You have already ready future proofed yourself, with a couple of trikes to fall back to, when your sense of balance decreases any more!!!
Will the trikes receive the Electric motors???
I recommend Bafang BBS-001 36V 350 w Mid drive motors, so you can still climb out of the valley (Hole!!) you live in!
