I have finally repaired the Extrawheel connectors to a robust condition. This is one of the original models and has taken a lot of punishment all over Australia .The connection is now sturdy and will fit on my other bike as well (a reconditioned tourer from the '80s).
Still no test ride (tomorrow) but no reason to suspect difficulties. I'll keep y'all posted.
