Frame tube thickness

I plan to use T50 frames to make a tandem and want to know the wall thickness of the main frame tube.
Has anyone cut one up?

If you indeed plan to cut one up, drill out one of the bottle cage mounts (they are just rivnuts) under the seat. Once it is out you'll be able to measure the thickness. If you decide to bail on the idea, you'll just need to replace the rivnut to restore the bike to original condition. Of course, there will be loose bits inside the tube but you probably won't hear it much.

Good idea Jim.
Thanks.

On further reflection, there's a non-destructive way to measure the thickness. Use a caliper to measure the outer diameter of the tube. Then use a stiff wire, like a section of coat hanger, and being careful to keep it straight and perpendicular to the bottle mount hole, insert it into the hole until it stops. Mark the wire as close to the opening as possible, or use your fingers as a guide. Pull out the wire and measure the distance from your fingers or mark to the end. Subtract that number from the caliper measurement and you have the wall thickness. It won't be exact but close enough that you can determine the nearest standard aluminum tube wall thickness.
