Cut the shaft in half and put a Rohloff or Pinion there, so the two halves rotate at different speeds.

I highly doubt anything will ever topple the simplicity, efficiency, and durability of the standard chain drivetrain and derraileur. Its 2018 with 100 plus years of development and a better option still has not been invented. Old school.

You keep a couple of links in your saddle bag, you can repair a chain. Carbon direct drive... if it's going to break it will do so big time and cost big money. I don't see it being a feasible idea. Maybe they use that technology with something different than cycling. Something that needs a light and efficient energy travel like avionics or space... just change the carbon to a ti alloy ... then it could be... lost in space

Chains are basically a whole bunch of bushing-bearings (chain pins) all interconnected. I suppose there could be one of these with bushing bearings instead of roller bearings. How long does your chain last?

So far drive shafts are simple and durable, but not efficient.

I wonder if it needs grease anywhere but inside the sealed bearings? Could be as dirty as a chain!
