Hanger failure/Drivetrain shred !!!!

Has anyone else experienced this with the S40 derailleur hanger - I am pulling out of my driveway and the hanger snapped and the derailleur went up and shredded the front cage - gouged the stay - bent the front derailleur and broke the front derailleur post. It may have also damaged a couple of spokes on my carbon rim. I have less than 200 miles on this frame set and I am obviously “not a happy Cruzbike”
The drivetrain is a SRAM Red Etap - 1st gen - and I need to consider going to a 1X drivetrain - does anyone have any experience with the SRAM Rival or Force 1X etap??

Never heard of that failure. Not victim blaming but curious as to what was going on at the time e.g., shifting multiple cogs up/down to the extreme ends of the cassette, shifting from big to small ring while simultaneously shifting the rear derailleur a bunch? Hard to believe it’d fail JRA. By design, derailleur hangers are meant to sacrifice themselves to save the more expensive bits so they’re relatively soft (aluminum) but it usually takes something more extreme e.g., stick in the chain, to get them to snap.

And to answer your second question: I have Force 1X on my S40, works great. 42 tooth chainring with an 10x46 cassette.

I had just coasted out of my driveway and was taking my first pedal stroke when it snapped - I had just ridden the bike the day before and wasn’t shifting or anything
As far as the 1X - Thank you - I think I may go to a Rival 1X, but am still looking

I saw another Cruzbike rider’s derailleur do that this summer. I suspect the hanger got bent inward, causing the chain to drop between the spokes and the cassette, pulling everything around. In her case the derailleur, hanger, and spokes were broken.

As for the SRAM 1x 10-52. I’ve been using it for a few years now and am very pleased. Good for climbing anything I have stamina for and pedaling past 40mph to nab KOMs.

I broke a few derailleur hangers on my V20c. The first one broke just before the warranty expired. So I ordered 2 new ones (one from warranty). It did not take long to break both of those! After the breaks, I got feedback on my chain length from Cruzbike and added 2 links. Since then I have not broken one (knock on wood). In all cases of breaking the hanger, it was on one of the first three pedal stroke from a stop. Most likely I was caught between gears after a fast stop or just had too much power on my initial strokes. I lost the hangers but managed to not get any other damage.

I have two Bacchetta recumbents and have put over 55,000 miles on them and only broke one derailleur hanger. But I blame that one on a bad setup as a I bought the bike used and had hardly any miles on it yet.

So my conclusion is with proper setup the derailleur hanger should last a long time.

Thousands of miles on my S40 with SRAM GX (11x50) with no problems. I damaged a hanger on my Q45 last year (with SRAM GX), but that was because it fell over onto the right side and the hanger did what it was supposed to do (save the derailleur).

Had my S40 a few years now. I have a mechaical GRX rear mech (1X). Other than it coming loose occasionally I've had no problems with the hanger.

Thanx to everyone for your feedback - upon inspection and damage assessment, I believe the hanger broke during the first pedal stroke due to a after-market pulley cage that appears to be bent and wasn’t tracking straight pulley-to-pulley - which may have been causing a little excessive torque on the chain/hanger. I am replacing the hanger and installing a carbon pulley cage, and will hope to be up and riding and not have anymore problems.
