Six frolicking Llamas were super excited to be taking on Suki’s playground, not once but twice! Jo was looking forward to going down the slide. All 6 Llamas had their sand shovels and buckets ready to go. We were definitely going to enjoy this outing. “Hey Llamas! How are you going to race with all that gear on your bikes.” Sadly the equipment was left behind, but we were not disheartened for long.
It was a well oiled machine lined up. For whatever reason, Connie Swinson was appointed the captaincy of this motley crew. With Jo Haselhurst, Sally Smith, Katherine Dempster, Jelleke de Vries, and Lorie Cochrane, we presented quite an impressive team roster. All 6 donut clad racers shot out of the gate like William Tell’s legendary arrow flying at the apple. Suddenly Lorie commented on Connie’s bike. “Gee, Connie, you’re bike is very nice but I think it’s a road bike.” “Of course not…Aaaack!” Connie replied. No time to change. At least it wasn’t her gravel bike — but that’s another story. Sally assured the team, “All we have to do is mollycoddle her and she’ll make it.” Genius! Katherine thought it was part of our devious plan.
Ever ready when a crisis occurs, Jo jumped in and assumed the Captain duties. The pace line was carried out to perfection. Every Llama (except Connie) cranked up the wattage and kph’s during their one-minute pulls. I forgot to mention Connie’s Zwift player got disconnected early on. Good thing it was stuck in gear 14 and not 8. Oh well, it’s part of the adventure.
Our goals were simple — be number 1 in the Vienna-Mocha world. Do not allow any Herd team to pass us. Finish in under an hour. Well, we can get check marks on 2 out of 3 of those wishes. An anonymous source was heard saying, “A team overtook us fairly early (big beefy blokes in blue shirts!!) not herd !” We think it was a TT1 team. (Maybe we should beef up with Diane Downie for next week.) Final time was 58:36. Oh well! We’ll have to settle for being Number 2 in the world. Congratulations to our sister team, the Camels, for once again finishing in the top 10, (#6) to be exact. What an awesome group of ladies!
Debbie Thompson suggested, “I'm convinced that one person on a road bike and the rest on TT bikes is a winning formula. It's happened a few times, and those teams have done better than expected.” No, I don’t think so.
