For the past 5 years, I've been having good success with 26 x 2.1 Kenda K-RADs from either Performance or Nashbar. On sale, they're in the $12 range. I run them at 80 psi. At 210#, I get on the order of 3000 to 3500 miles before they're worn too much (& I start getting a few flats).

My commuter route has a several gravel stretches & even a 500 yard singletrack short cut, if I choose. The K-RADs handles these stretches with reasonable aplomb with their checkerboard tread pattern. Plus, on the road, they're reasonably quiet & roll rather smoothly. I also use Mr. Tuffy liners for thorn & glass protection.
