How to get a light weight donor.

No, you got it wrong. I don't have the answer. That's why I posted. I want your opinion of the best way to aquire a light donor bike economically?

The Trek Y26 seems to be the gold standard. So all I have to do is go to enough garage sales to find one, right?
Mark D was complaining about lifting his Y26 down from the wall so, I'm not even sure about the Y26.

The quest is on.

I don't have a Y-26, I have a Pacific brand knock off. It's made from cheaper/heavier grade aluminum than a quality frame and yes, it's a chunky bike. It doesn't ride that way, though, because it has a quality drive train and the power transmission of the kit is really good.

I just don't think you can get a super lightweight bike out of a conversion. You can, though, get a bike that while heavier, rides better than bikes half it's weight. It was my cheapy Pacific frame that won out over my Strada.

Did you improve the cranks, bb, pedals or anything like that. YOu know maybe a derailer or sprockets and what not?
I still remember your warning about light frames and I'm sure with my weight I could crinkle a light one pretty badly. LOL
What's you opinion about the weight of Defjack's latest acquisition. His is the read deal Y 26, right?

I junked all the original parts. All I used from that bicycle was the frame and rear shock.

I think DefJack has a sweetheart of a bike. Weight weenies would say it's still heavy, but who cares?

Yes, I did. I already had a nice Rockshox to use on it and the fork that came on the bike was a 24" (obviously taken from another bike to cobble this one back together) and weighed a metric crapton.

The Y -26 is a heavy bike dont have a scale. Anyway I get a nice smooth ride and its plenty fast for me.My build #7 frame weighed 4 lbs but weighed 39lbs with the old steel kit.It would be around 37lbs with a new kit. You could also get the weight down with a super $$$$$$$$ light weight mt bike but its not worth it unless you already have the bike. Jack
