Jim, we hope that you and the entire Parker family have remained safe! We received word that power has been restored in our portion of Pender County; herculean and heroic work by the by the power crews. Being remote we have not yet determined the level damage, but it's just "stuff" away.

Unlike many in the area, we were very fortunately. No flooding and minimal damage to the home. The vegetation bore the brunt of the impact of multiple hours of 100+mph winds. Our barn, however, took a direct hit from a centuries old live oak; the one tree we expected to survive the storm. The barn was unoccupied, so no issues other than structural damage. The center of the eye made landfall within five miles.

With respect to that oak... if you got a descent 4x4 with a toe rope you could quite easily re-pot that oak. I once was in a storm damaged forest and it was was suggested by a forester not to get too close to an uprooted tree as the wind, if blowing from the opposite direction, could resit the tree.

I have seen blown over trees looking very healthy. DavidCH is right. Stand it up again.

This will be my last response to this thread. It is obvious that you are not arborist! The tree is now lumber and firewood. As much as we hated to see the oldest member of our family depart, it was time to say goodbye. Hopefully, the lumber will live on as fine furniture and the firewood will keep families warm at night. This is the best way we can honor such a magnificent tree! Feel free to continue the debate without me!!!
