Looking to Purchase and Convert a Folding Bike

Hi,

I've done some reading of the forums and I'm really impressed by how ballsy and competent people on these forums are.

We are moving for work over seas (from the US) to a small hilly city and into an apartment much smaller than the houses we have been living in. I'm looking to wind up with something small, light, and foldable in the $1,000 + conversion kit range. I know almost nothing about folding bikes but it seems to me that I'd like to go no smaller than a 20" wheel. Something like a Dahon Speed P8 (http://dahon.com/mainnav/foldingbikes/single-view/bike/speed_p8-17.html) would seem to be the right sort of bike. Anyone have any experience with this bike or in this space that could steer me in the right direction?

When cruzbike could have stayed a conversion kit as at the time it was a hobby that might pay for itself,,,,,, to allow those to get started in recumbent riding...... HAD that been the case we would have had many bikes like you have chosen to convert.

I'm heading into New York tomorrow to try-out folding bikes. . .

I found out that the conversion kit weighs 10 lbs so I'm looking for a very light folding bike. :)

Update on my search

Hi all,

Charles I'm in Pomona NY (Rockland county) for the moment.

I road a bunch of folding bikes today. I found most of them to be very uncomfortable. Can anyone advise if they get more comfortable after the conversion?

To ride as is I'm leaning towards the Bike Friday New World Tourist https://www.bikefriday.com/bicycles/touring/1490
My second choice is the the Tern Verge P20 http://www.ternbicycles.com/us/bikes/verge-p20
?I also see Verge has a bunch of bikes that I did not ride which might work as well.

Does anyone have any experience with these bikes and/or any suggestions?

I ride a DF folding bike to

I ride a DF folding bike to the train station. It is literally a pain in my @$$. My converted bike is very comfortable. So, yes, much more comfortable.

Bike Fridays are very nice folding bikes and what I would get if I wanted a DF bike. But I don't think you need to go that high end at all. There are at least two Cruzigami Mantis es in existence, the origami Mantis has great bones for a conversion (spend the money you save on components for the bike).

(fully suspended folding bikes are nice because they are usually slightly longer wheelbase than regular folding bikes).
