Been pretty busy lately and haven't ridden as much as usual the last couple weeks...
I took the S40 out last Wednesday with intentions to do a solo 30 to 50 mile "shakedown ride".
It was pretty windy and I noticed right away that the S40 is not a Vendetta
I was trying to get used to the 1x11 groupset... I wasn't sure if I liked it or not...
I got to about mile 16, when I shifted and heard/felt something weird in the brifter, I tried to shift again and it was a no-go...
I stopped and looked things over, but couldn't see any problems... I tried shifting up and down, but the cable wouldn't move.
I decided to turn around and limp back to my car in a single speed S40...
I got home and took things apart...
Some strands of the shifter cable broke and were keeping the brifter from shifting...
Sunday, I replaced the cable and cable housing, added a Wolf tooth derailleur extender, made adjustments.
Monday, I lead a Veterans Recumbent ride on my trike (Catrike 700), so couldn't get out...
Yesterday, I went out with a regular riding buddy for a 30 mile ride on a very familiar route, so I could "feel" the differences of the S40 vs the Vendetta...
Again, I noticed more wind in my face. The more upright seating position made riding with a DF rider easier in that we could chat a bit... Since I'm not used to being in a pace line or drafting, I took the lead and he was happily drafting off me. He commented on the much greater draft he was able to get, vs my Vendetta...
We did the 15 miles out and back (total of 30) and I have to say that it took more effort...
I like having double chainrings up front and the 9tX46t cassette leaves gaps in gears that I'm not used to... The S40 can definitely crawl up hills!
Another side effect of the more upright seating position is that I felt a bit more shock in my spine from the bumps...
I have some old lumbar back issues (from a 5 story fall during a rescue mission in the Military). I don't seem to have much problem with more reclined seating, but I think 40 degrees may be a bit too upright for me...
I know I've only had the S40 for a couple weeks now and haven't ridden it much, but I'm wondering if this horse will remain in my stable...
Just my first impressions...
I guess I'll ride it a bit more before making any final decisions...
Blessings,
Rudy (AKA DocS)
