Loose Headset

Greetings from a newbie. I have my new Softrider all assembled and am in the process of learning how to ride it. However, the headset seems to be a bit looser than it should be. This is the first bike I've owned that doesn't have a threaded headset. How do you tighten it? Thanks in advance for your assistance and happy cruzin'.

Loosen the two bolts on the TFT clamp, then tighten down the bolt on the top cap. Retighten the bolts on the TFT clamp. That should do it!

Actually...

If this is a new Sofrider,

If you look just above the headset cup, and beneath the pivot clamp, there is a ring with an allen-head cap screw coming in from the side, almost like an oversized seatpost clamp.

If you tighten that cap screw, the "clamp" will expand in height and take up the slack in the headset. There's no need to completely tighten the cap screw - it just positions a wedge inside the clamp to expand the assembly. Send me a PM if you need more info.

Best,

Doug

Thanks Mark and Doug -

It is the V2 model and I eventually figured out what was needed, since I didn't read Doug's more detailed post until this morning. I got it cinched up nicely last night and the handling at higher speeds is significantly improved. I'll admit I still can't hold a completely straight line over 20 mph but the high speed handling is improving with less headset slop and more miles in the saddle. Whoops, I guess I mean miles on the seat! :D

I recently bought a house in the neighborhood where I first learned to ride a bike and I feel like I am enjoying that experience all over again. It's fun to just ride around the block! Not ready to take it out on a group ride yet, but that's OK.
