Magped peddles review

I switched to Magped after breaking my ankle in a nasty crash 5 months ago and have just gotten out for a road ride to test them. I have always used SPD clips with mountain bike shoes and found being clipped in on DF and recumbents better than flat peddles. After the crash I suspected that a clip locked during the accident and caused the break. I still wanted to use clips so thought I'd try the Maped option. I put the Sport model on the Q45 and the Gravel model on the V20, both have the 150NM strength magnets. For a bit of background there are 3 magnet option with 200, 150 or 100Nm strength.

I have been using the gravel peddles on the trainer for several week and finally got out for my first road ride on the Q45 yesterday. Clipping in is no more difficult than the SPD though there is a short learning curve. The gravel peddles are a bit easier to get into because there are no studs to get hung up on. Getting started is easy on both as there is enough platform to peddle even if the magnet is not connected. In both cases the peddle hangs down as shown making getting to the magnet side is automatic. Disconnecting is easy and if you panic just pulling hard gets you out, though a bit of a twist helps. I think the Sport on the Q45 will be good for around town and on the trails I ride. The Gravel model has not been on the road yet but work well on the trainer. As I gain my confidence back I may switch to the stronger 200Nm magnets next year.

A plus for the sport is the blue colour option that almost matches the Q45 paint.

Thanks for the review, wasn't aware of these but will check them out.

I've got a trip coming up with a lot of riding, some of it on (sub)urban roads and one of the rides includes some climbs that I'm fairly sure I can't manage at my current level of experience/conditioning on the S40. I switched to flat pedals because I'm expecting to need to walk a bit but TBH I like being clipped in and find getting underway easier with clipless pedals than on flats. The only reason I'm currently planning on using the flats is my cycling shoes (SPD compatible) aren't as walkable. Yes, you can certainly walk in them but they're not all that comfortable doing so, especially up a 13% climb.
