My conversion has a click...

Hi All

I have a click on my conversion - once each crank rev - tried oiling all the joins without luck... any thoughts anyone??

Had something similar - particularly when pushing hard on the pedals.

After tugging on various bits of the front triangle to provoke the click while the bike was stationary, I thought it might be the cranks. Are your cranks the square-taper type?

Half a week after I noticed it, I dismantled the entire bike anyway, so I never completely tracked it down. Hoping it's the cranks, as it will then vanish when I switch to external bearings! The only other culprit I can think of would be cracks in the kit parts, but I hope not... Riding hands-off made no difference.

Anyone else?

Can you duplicate it when off the bike, in the workstand? If so, maybe you can get close enough to figure out where it's coming from. Could be pedals, could be cranks, could be most anything. Is your bottom bracket sealed bearing or cup and cone? It definitely sounds like something in the cranks or bottom bracket.

I'd start with chainring bolts and crank bolts. Check to make sure they're tight. Try all the obvious things first before you start tearing your bike apart.

I experienced a similarly frustrating week when my Freerider was new about 18 months ago...

After suspecting and tightening/disassembling/greasing everything, I discovered the culprit was my thigh rhythmically pressing the rear brake cable against the frame tube, and making a metallic "click" for every revolution of the cranks.

A cable tie restored my sanity

Hi CurryS,
It might be as simple as a cable end from the FD clicking on the crank. Hope it is.

In the past I have had "clicking" and it was the crank arm loose on the tapered square crank shaft on my DF bike.
I agree wholeheartedly with Mark:

Good luck with this.

my 2c - When the FD is over to the right to get the chain on the big ring, it might be hitting the crank - happened with me.

And - get a fresh set of eyes to look at it - often helps.

Yes that what I have - I found that one of the square-taper cranks wasn't on as well as I like so I've tighten it and also the top swivel on the moving bottom bracket was also a little slack  . I've tighten these up and the click has gone away when I push hard on the pedals when stationary, Hopefully that fixed it!! :D - I guess it is the bike just bedding in after 240 miles.

Great help as always guys

Thanks

Tightening everything up didn't fix the problem when riding the bike, so I took the cranks off, put plumbers Teflon tape around the square tapers and retighten the cranks.

....seems to have worked on the two rides I've done so far...

Figures crossed.

PS haven't been very active on the forum lately - sorry to busy riding the bike ;-)
