New S40

Some info on the new S40 is out and I can't wait to see it. It has most of the updates I was hoping for the next gen V20 and then some. Hopefully they will make their way to the V20 soon. I always loved the Silvio with the ~30 seat angle so I am sure I will be torn between the two.

Thru axle

I have been considering an S40 for quite awhile so this is good news, however the web site does not express what the S40 changes are. Are mention three items are all that has changed? Perhaps someone could describe what these changes mean practically for those of us who are not yet cruzbike owners.

Flat mount disc - new standard for mounting disc callipers. Less parts = lighter. Easier too?

Thru axle - new standard for axles - safer (no possibility of accidental quick release) and stiffer wheel attachment especially front fork =better power transfer. Possibly lighter. Disadvantage: takes longer to swap a wheel. Only a concern during race timelines.

Visco-set headset - dampens oscillations - gets rid of wheel flop. makes off bike handling easier. Should decrease initial learning time because overreactions and overcorrections are slowed and more steady. And smooth steering input. Should remove the remote possibility of speed wobble. Disadvantage: higher stem stack height.

New colours.

These are all significant improvements and firsts or early adoption in the recumbent world.

All disadvantages are very minor.

Sometimes, i think Cruzbike should make a story about their product update year to year. I think Cruzbike is one of the fast moving ones becuase it was just like last year that the new batch of S40 was produced

+1 on the new headset!

I hope it is backward compatible .

Indeed it is - all previous S40's can use the Viscoset headset as it is a standard size EC style headtube.

The fact that we have pulled off these changes mid-pandemic and been able to weave through the manufacturing process where RAMPANT supply issues of raw material and components are a serious threat to everyone has been a lot of hard work and miraculous timing.

I can't wait for this one to arrive - its the best yet (yes I say that every iteration - )

So, I'm not the only one who has inadvertently caught the lever with a shoe's heel while turning, and then wondered some time later why the shifting is suddenly messing up as that axle started unthreading? I figured no one else experiences that because few people have 4E wide feet, riding with hiking shoes.

Does this include the S30 and Silvio 2.1 being compatible with the Viscoset headset?

The new version allows wider tires. It comes with 32, but based on the pictures we've seen, 35 should easily fit.
This makes it more suitable for touring. The previous version was limited to 30 mm; not much of a difference compared to the 28 mm on my V20.
Very tempted to add it to the stable! N + 1 again ! :)

I have the 2017 version of the S40. I just mounted 32mm continental tubeless tires on it and they work great. Not limited to 30mm

The "limited to 30 mm" comment referred to the immediately previous model S40, which has reduced tire clearance in the fork, not the previously previous or prior models. I'm running 38's + fenders on my 2017, but they're 650B.

I have to say, I REALLY like the colors that have been revealed so far. It breaks my heart to say it but... I like them much better than the blue S40 I just got in October! Oh well. Great job to whoever's in charge of that. Looking forward to seeing the other two.

You can always buy another one in your perfect color combination. More than one Cruzbike is always better.

Thanks, that helps.

I know many owners customize there bike to varying degrees so I am wondering if any S40 owners could discuss how they have modified their S40 and why. I am trying to decide whether to go with a frameset or a complete bike. If the custom elements are significant then the frameset would make more sense.

Also, is there any indication of turn around time for the S40. My neighbor ordered a new Specialized carbon fiber bike and it took 8 months to deliver!

This is a good question - and really I would say the frame set vs. complete S40 is a question of component avalability for you or the shop you get components from... lots of parts are scarce nowadays so building up from a frame *might* be a challenge depending on the spec you are hoping for.

The complete I would say is VERY nicely equipped all around and is hard to beat unless you are going for high end or just have specific faves for components (like Campy, etc)

Once the bikes are in the warehouse they will ship only a few days after ordering. The S40 opens for pre-orders June 1 I believe and will ship by the end of June... they are on the way physically to us right now - so there won't be any phantom waiting/infinite delays for sure.

Whereas some companies have been selling "pre-orders" for bikes that aren't even manufactured yet - we aren't into doing that. There are too many wild variables in the industry right now to be selling vaporware. I am always shocked when companies do that.

If you get a complete bike you can ride it immediately. You can get new components slowly, but it is a hassle having a shed full of stuff you do not want and putting it on ebay. I ordered a 2020 S40 frame and it came really quickly. Cruzbike get their stuff out of the door. The components are taking somewhat longer to arrive. I ordered my Grasshopper before they started making them. Took two months.

S40 frame set was my first bent Bike. Here’s what I did to it.

1) Thor Easy Seat - just way more comfy for me. Your results may vary.
2) 155mm crank set, Sram Apex shortened by Bikesmith Fabrications. 50/34 w 11-35 cassette
3) Found the head rest unnecessary so flipped it upside down to make an easy rack. Cut a few inches off the base to allow it to go further into the frame. Keep an elastic Velcro band wrapped for securing the odd jacket, bag of bagels, etc.
4) Hope Twentyfive wheelset w Panracer Gravel King 35mm tubeless tires.
5) Ventisit seat pad

Plenty of help on theForum if you run into any tough spots.

Enjoy!
