New Silvio

100 miles a day

I rode 105 miles (avg) a day (range 99 - 134) for nine days last September in the Ride Across Britain. I found that there was more than adequate down time to recover each day, and I was sleeping in a tent. I'm 60 for the record. And that was on a DF bike. I felt stronger at the end of the ride than I did when I started.

On the other hand, Paris-Brest-Paris in 2011 took a huge amount out of me and definitely pushes the crazy level. On "days" 2 and 3 I had 27 hours on the bike, followed by one hours sleep and then another 18. All in it was 760 miles in 82 hours. Not recommended and really not enjoyable (for me). Some people thrive on it, however. In some sense you have to experience it to find out which group you are in, although Charles seems to know already!

I will have to see how things

I will have to see how things develope once I start riding the Silvio this Sping. To date the longest ride I have taken is about 50 miles and that was when I was alot younger. In this last year the longest ride I have taken is about 15 miles on a DF. The bike I rode this past year is a cruser and I rode sitting up staight and the wind was a definate factor. When I looked at the road bikes at my LBS I knew that they would not work for me because I can't crain my neck like I would have to on a road bike. In 1996 I broke my neck and had a fusion and plate in my neck and do not have alot of flexibilty. That is why I was interested in the Cruzbike. The Cruzbike put me in a road bike that I can handle.

I am in the process of finding out what I like or don't like.

I have registered for the Bike Sebring Century where I will try with the Quest. If it turns out I enjoy it I may continue to try emulating the Parkers on my Vendetta as best I can - when I get it.

Time will tell.

The DALMAC is more of a tour somewhat similar to Mick's RAB. I really enjoy riding here in Michigan and I think it would be cool to ride across the Mackinaw Bridge on a bike at least once in my life.

Eric,
Try reversing the seat

Eric,
Try reversing the seat post on the quest to get a more laid back position for Sebring.

Making the Quest more aero for Sebring and DALMAC

@john - Yup tried this already but the suspension makes using a bag and/or really laid back seatback a challenge. I removed the rack, flipped the seat post and damn near had the seat back resting on top of the rear tire but this left no room for my Bachetta Brain Box (BBB) and suspension travel impinges into where I would like to put the seat so at the moment the seat is back to about where it was but with the BBB attached in lieu of the rack. I had to put the leading edge pocket of the BBB over the top of the Quest's seatback to have enough clearance to keep the rear wheel shock travel from having the rear tire scorch the bottom of the BBB - learned this the hard way

I think I'll create a Getting the Q ready for Sebring thread in the next few days with pictures and a list of gear I'm contemplating - with much thanks to Dan Fallon for his help and suggestions.

@Rod - Here is the DALMAC registration info from this link:

  • Applications must be postmarked or submitted online by July 31, 2012.

  • Contact information MUST be provided.

  • If route choice is full, your second route choice as indicated on the application will be honored if available.

  • If riding with others, submit applications together. Mail applications in same envelope or submit online same day.

  • Be sure to provide proper signatures.

  • Incomplete or improperly completed applications may result in delays or rejection due to routes filling.

  • Absolutely no day of event registration.

I'm pretty sure I'll try the DALMAC this year but not 100% yet but I hear it fills up fast so I'll cogitate about it some more this weekend and perhaps go ahead and register so I can be sure of getting a place.

DALMAC is fun but their website needs an overhaul

OK, I cut and pasted from the DALMAC website and saved before proof reading - dates are old all over their site.

Found more info for 2013 here (Note the old date in the stupid link itself!): http://dalmacnotices.blogspot.com/2012/08/pre-ride-planning-for-dalmac-2013.html

Where it states - August 1, 2013 is the last day to apply for DALMAC 2013 .

Any other Cruzbikers interested in doing DALMAC together?

New/smaller Bacchetta Brainbox fit?

Does anyone know if the smaller Bacchetta Brain Box fit on the Silvio?

Triple B on the Silvio

I have managed to fit the new Bachetta Brain Box (BBB aka Triple B) onto the back of the Quest by removing the rack that comes with the Quest and repositioning the rear seat stays where they connect at the top of the seat post.

The BBB is designed to be mounted on an angled seat back or combination of seat back and headrest. The front wedge shape of the BBB is expected to fit flush or nearly so against the back of the seat as it uses a suspension strap over the front of the seat to hold the wedge shaped bag against the back of the seat.

The wedge length is 10 to 11 inches. If you measure the back of the Silvio seat top down to the rubber suspension bushing mount on the back of the seat this looks to be far less than this which means the bag won't be supported correctly. On the Quest, it is still not ideal but in this case the seat post and seat stays end up supporting the bottom leading edge of the bag with the seat post strap. I am not sure where you could loop this strap on the Silvio.

If you put some sort of headrest (or seatback extension) on your Silvio then you might be able to suspend the BBB from the headrest or a combination of headrest and seat back.

Well I haven't posted for a

Well I haven't posted for a while so I thought I would let you all know how things are going with my Silvio. I must start out and say I love my Silvio and am very glad I purchased the 1.5 as the more laid back position of the 2.0 is not something I am ready for right now. Now to my experience of learning to ride the Silvio. My first attempt at ridding was more difficult than I had thought it would be. It took me a couple trips to a parking lot before I was able to start riding and a few more before I wanted to try the bike trails. I did have a couple of falls due to putting the hand breaks on too hard in situation where I had to react quickly without thinking. I am probably getting close to 100 miles of riding on the bike and true to what I have heard from others on the forum I am much more comfortable and am starting to relax and enjoy ridding.
