Now that Silvio II is on order, I'm all giddy just like with Silvio I. All I can think about is getting it built up and to start riding it.

I did have some questions, though. When I did my first build, I did not use any type of lubricant on the carboyokes where they tie into the bottom bracket bracket, or to the frame and dropouts. Should this have some type of lubricant or compound on it?

I've been meaning to try hairspray on the rear ends of front carboyoke, to make sure there is absolutely no movement in that important joint. I hear it works on stems.

I've heard that, too. I've also seen this recommended. I'd worry a little about hairspray because of the carrier. Dimethyl ether, alcohol and acrylates. That doesn't sound like a good thing to put on CF. I know you're supposed to keep paint thinner away from CF and that sounds a lot like a recipe for paint thinner.

I think cyanoacrylate (crazy glue) would work similarly and benefit from its capillary action. You could bolt everything up and then cement it.

Sounds awfully permanent.

I've been reading through various bike forums and opinions are as varied on this issue as any I've seen in awhile.

One person says you have to have something as a barrier to prevent galvanic corrosion
Another person says it's impossible to get galvanic corrosion between CF and aluminum
Another person advocates grease
Another person says absolutely not to grease.
Another person says you want nothing.
Another person says you want the magic compound made just for CF assemblies.

Good Lord!

This post is on the subject of my first question as a "new owner" of a Silvio and by March will be on the roads of Indiana learning the nuances of MBB FWD recumbents. With the Optima ORCA, which is being replaced, I always told everyone "I knew in 100 feet that I could ride the bike, but it took 100 miles to lose the white knuckles!"

So this thread was begun by John B. about 18 months ago and both John T. and Doug added their comments then, but I did not see a specific answer to the question that bothers me.

Simply stated, are there any compounds or lubricants that are to be avoided in the construction or the daily care of the Silvio? Especially in regards to the carboyoke as it interfaces with the metal pieces.

Perhaps there is more knowledge (or at least more experience) about this subject in the last 18 months.

I have around 10,000 miles on my Silvios and I''m gonna say no. It does not matter much. Not that I've seen.

Thanks for the info. 10000 miles on your Silvio's, sounds like 3000 to 5000 miles per year, that some good riding! Congrats.
