The cozy flower filled French countryside proved to be much tougher than anticipated. Many teams were caught out at the start by the first winding rolling hills. When it's a fast course and you drop off the back, we all know catching back up isn't easy. If Thursday's racers didn't know this last night, they know it now.

So, I guess we should start off with High Speed's futile efforts. Like as it is often said, a mother will always love her baby no matter how ugly that baby might be. Well, we love our High Speed team even though they fell short in last night's efforts. They did turn a decent time, especially when considering one of their riders showed up on a Time Trial bike. A time trial bike is, of course, a no-no since it doesn't allow drafting the other riders. This is a race after all, a drafting race. We will give him kudos for sticking with the group for the entire race! This is actually quite a feat and a hint that the team might ride him like a rented mule next week. The good news is the record is still out there and High Speed has the best chance at grabbing it. Next week guys.

High Speed's little brother Low Drag had a similar experience in that they failed to achieve their goal to pass someone but they did manage a decent ride. They were able to synchronize those cranksets and maximize the group speed most of the time. On those few occasions where an engine sputtered the group pumped seafoam into the injectors and they were quickly hitting on all cylinders again. They finished well up the pecking order from the week before and can expect to see this trend continue.

Our ladies were, as always, very predictably, steady and fast! Don't be fooled by those girly looking kits and smiling faces. Those girls are killers. Every week we see them getting faster and faster. The only sad part is so many recumbent ladies are missing out on the fun. I cannot figure this one out. I know they are out there and I know they would love it if they simply gave it a try. Perhaps someone can fill me in on why they will not come out and play.

The Poaching ATP group used an interesting strategy this week. They abandoned the fastest Espresso league and placed all their Espresso riders in Frappe league teams. The plan was to dominate the tough, tough Frappe league. I think it was moderately successful as they place two teams (4th, 7th) in the top ten and two more in the top 25 spots (18th,25th). Jason powered his ATP Argon to 17th, while in his second race of the night he assisted the ATP Oxygen team to 25th. Larry rode with Jason for the first time in the Argon team. If you are a hard core racer these ATP teams are made for you. Both Jason's teams averaged over 300 watts for the race.

Lots of noble efforts but the Recumbent Rider Star of the Night goes to Benphyr Knou. You will not find team ATP Radon in the Frappe Division which is where they were registered. ATP was especially devious when they attempted to sneak in a fourth sandbagger A+ rider into that roster. The WRTL wise to such shenanigans caught them and promptly forced moved them into Espresso to the delight of the other Frappe teams. Ben wins the star because he not only held on to this steroid laden team he led them across the finish line averaging 43 kmh.

Another Team in the espresso is the killer Bees and stalwart recumbent racer Chris Cooper. The Bees had another good run but their single A+ racer automatically moves them into a higher category than the mostly B level racers can be expected to compete against.

We had several lone recumbents on teams this week. When comparing the stats for Larry and Ben they are exactly the same and Chris is not far above them. In the distance far, far, away you can hear. Hey! That looks like three strong B racers add this to our strong C racers and we have a high octane charged Latte Class recumbent group.

Team avg Speeds (kmh):
ATP Argon 44:35
ATP Oxygen 44:16
ATP Radon 43:08
Killer Bees 42:98
Flamingos 36:78
High Speed 35:60
Unicorns 34:90
Low Drag 33.10

High Speed's Race Recap

On Thursday Aug 20th, High Speed came together with their largest team yet. The four horsemen of Jim, Ray, Robert and Josh were there in addition to two new comers for the team; Ken and Rob L. Before the race, the team reviewed times from the early zones and came up with a straight forward plan; reach the 6km, 12km and 18km markers in 10, 20, 30 minutes. With a bit of luck, finish close to 40 minutes.

High Speed started with a delay of only 6 minutes. We knew this course was going to be fast. Ahead of us was one Herd team that we have passed before, but they had a full 3 minute head start! Out of the gate, the team sped up to 30km and joined together in a blob. We hit the first climb in the river section and everyone was together. In this section, we had our first (and really only) issues of the night. I believe it was Rob L that fell off the back of the pack first. Ken dropped back to give a wheel and they quickly traded places. Josh fell back to give Ken some draft and get back to the team. This is also the area where we found out that Capt’n Josh missed giving directions to everyone at the start and Robert H was on a TT bike. While the rest of us could draft Robert, he received no draft benefit from us.

After the one incident near the river, the team sped up and through the rollers in the balloon fields. We were hitting 40-41kph down hill and cresting at about 38kph; really good pacing for the team. Finally, we reached the end of the rollers and a flat section. Just a few minutes later, we were coming into the turns and small climbs to the aqueduct. We took the first few lead in climbs well. As we approached the main climb, Capt’n Josh reminded everyone it is really short so power through and the the team responded. As we went under the arch, most of us were in or around the top 10 on that climb for the pen.

This brought us to the back half of the course. From this point on, there were still a few small hills, but nothing much. We knew to watch out for two small rises at 4-5%. The first one in the sunflower fields and the second a bit later in the wooded section. After those, most of the ride was flat with a few small bumps at 1 or 2% gradient.

With out 4km to go in a 24km race, we finally spied our first, and only, team that we would pass. The Herd of Coyotes were just ahead and we were closing fast. I reminded the team to stay close and keep our pace as the Coyote lead knows the rules and they will let us through without incident. We were surprised when we only passed 3 Coyotes and not a full team. Apparently they had a power difference and their 4 lead riders were still a minute ahead of us! With only 4km to go on a flat course, we ran out of road before we caught up to the rest of them.

With 1km to go, the front of the group started to pick up the pace for the finish. Our group started to string out and a reminder went through discord to keep the front 4 together. With 400m to go, the sprint started. Jim, Ray, Ken and Rob L started to pull away from Robert H and Josh. The front four finished with an official time of 40:46.855 for an average speed of 35.61kmh.

How did we do against the plan? At 6km, we were about 30 seconds behind. At 12km, we were still around 30 seconds behind. At 18km, we brought that down to within 5 seconds. The last 6km we still held a really good pace, it was just really hard to make up ground against the clock.

Well since I am the TT frame guilty party thats on me - but I was still overall pleased and thought that High Speed kicked ass.

It is a learning experience and not just for you :) I think the whole team learned about it last night. And yes, High Speed kicked some ass. Especially you in being able to keep with us the entire 41 minutes!

Robert you guys did in fact kick tail! Category ratings are based on your best three showings. Two more like last nights and you will be bumped up to the C cat. And that is a good thing.

It is always encouraging when we have these little reminders that the people we highly respect and place on a pedestal of “most knowledgeable” are indeed human and make unknowing mistakes. And then without draft assistance from the group he steps up to not only ride it out the whole way but to stay with the group the whole way. Wow!
