This morning following a 12.5 mile ride to work, I noticed that the handlebar turning radius was now severely restricted to only + / - 45 degrees. No apparent major potholes or road trauma other than the 125 miles / week commuting to/from work over the past two years in non-rainy weather. I also noticed a new defect on the front tube shown in the photo. ? related. I wanted to get some input before ripping into the front fork myself, or trying to find help at the local bike shops.

Remove the fork

It will not take much to slide the fork out of the headtube. Why not do that and see if you can detect a fault that would cause damage from the inside?

Remove the fork and reinstall

Remove the fork and reinstall the screw that has come out from the wall of the steerer. Install with loctite.

Help!

John was right on! The small screw attaching one of the two rocker shaped bits of metal inside the shock tube came loose, and lodged between the shock tube and the frame tube, actually almost puncturing through the metal causing the dimple.

My problem now, is that I can't get the shock tube out of the frame tube so that I can chase down and reinstall the screw (which is now in the main body tube).

The black-caps of the tube seemingly preventing my removal of the shock tube don't seem to be unscrewable, from my initial exploratory efforts with a rubber loop pipe wrench. Before I came at it with an actual pipe wrench, I thought that I would pause and get some advice, since I have absolutely no idea what I'm doing here.

Any advice would be most welcome at this point!

Figured it out

OK, I now realize that the shock tube should slide out easily. In this case, the other screw was half way out, and prevented me from pulling the tube out easily, but it finally came out.

The screw is now stripped, after having hammered through the frame metal.

John, can you tell me what the official name / sizing of this screw is so I can order a replacement from CruzBike or locally?

Thanks

I do not have one, nor do I

I do not have one, nor do I have a communication channel to the OEM manufacturer; but I suspect it would be an M3 or M4, more likely M4.
