Question on S-40 Setup

I've noticed the big stack of spacers on the steer tube, raising the TFT above the headset considerably. My Silvio 1.0 is not like this. Is there a particular reason the steer tube has been left so long and spaced like that? Is there any reason the steer tube couldn't be whacked a little closer, effectively dropping the TFT a good inch, or so? Is this done to accomodate those of us who are a little more "girthy", or is there an otherwise great reason to leave it long?

All things being equal - which they are not - the boom on the S40 is curved near the bottom bracket and the old Silvio 1.0 there is no bend, right? That would affect the end of the boom that points towards you.

I’m 6’1” and the spacers and full steerer tube length work fone for thigh clearence for me. I think I could cut a half inch off the steerer tube and remove a spacer or two but going to the curved slider might result in a better position overall.

I guess I will get it set up as is and see how she fits. But know this, if I have way more room between my knees and the handlebars than I need, I have a hacksaw and I know how to use it!

X2 on slap the stem Mark though, I left the smallest spacer ring between the head tube and TFT. I used a tubing cutter on both my S30 and V20 cause I wanted to insure an absolutely square cut. Just remember to cut above the star nut and then wack it down the steer tube afterwards. Doing so lowered the handlebars and brought down my hands. Still have plenty of knee room though it made getting a water bottle outta the boom cage around my aero-belly a bit more challenging on my V20.

That's the way I do it, too. I was only kinda sorta kidding about the hacksaw thing.

I want it pretty low, that's just me. Not sure I will use that WB mount, anyway. Never say never, I guess.

Paco1961 said he is 6'1", left the spacers in, and likes the fit. I am 5'4" and cut my fork all the way down (no spacers), and the handlebar is well placed for me. I think it's largely an issue of height. I could have left the spacers in and ordered the curved slider, and I probably would have had a similar result.

I would leave the steerer tube alone. Once it is cut, it is irreversible and therefore, would depreciate the value of your bike if you plan to sell it in the future. There is some room between the steerer tube and steering column, you can put the spare spacers there.

The long steer tube is there to allow for a better fit for all riders. Easy to cut the steer tube short for shorter riders, but not so easy to make it longer.
