Riding pants

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has a suggestion for riding pants. I need something for hot weather that has good coverage since I burn really easy.

thanks!

get some running tights

I like any pair of running tights. No need topay for expensive cycling knicks, they are not as comfortable or cool in the right places. I use mine all through summer here in Perth, where it does get very hot.

My choices

My choices are:

-Summer.
Loose synthetic shorts.
I buy 'em on sale at sporting goods outlet stores.
They wick moisture away and the loose fit works to vent heat very well.
(I sweat a lot. A LOT.)
There are drawbacks....
Insects can fly into and up the short garments, so I keep a sharp lookout...
and the loose shorts I prefer are not aerodynamic.
Poor aerodynamics loses the race, sure, but I'm not racing.
Besides, in my hilly area, overall speed is improved by climbing quickly!

-Winter.
Waterproof mountaineering pants.
Mine are leftover technical mountaineering pants, from way-back-when.
They breathe (GoreTex), are armored, ventilated, waterproof and they're
actually quite aerodynamic!

The bottom line?
None of the riding gear I use was made for bicyclists.
No pads needed!

If I were looking to buy a new pair of shorts, for riding my Cruzbike,
I would consider aquiring rowing shorts.
You know, the skin-tight, armored-bottom garment worn by athletes
that row those fast, tippy, narrow, round-bottom, scull-powered
sliding-seat race boats!

Good luck,
Steve

Thanks!

I'll try tre running tights. Sadly I'll burn to a crisp on anything but a short ride so shorts won't work for me. I'm glad to hear the pads aren't necessary. Those pants are crazy expensive!

For shorts...

I tend to use swimwear - usually the thigh-length triathalon style suits for men are great.
Cool, no extra pads, look good enough, usu can find them VERY cheap (esp end of season).

They do tend to run small, and might be constricting.
Also, they may not be as durable as true biking shorts but less than $20 vs $80+ makes up for the lack of durability.

I've heard folks say Rowing Shorts work well (best?) but I've never used em.

sunlight damage

As to wear, I find the tops of the thighs and knees give way from sunlight damage before the seat of pants is worn. Maybe different in other climates. Avoid the ones with the sylish low cut waist.

Not Pants, But

-related riding wear/ware!

Just adding to the no-pads-needed theme:
riding gloves do not need to be padded either, as recumbent riders
do not support any weight on their hands.

My gloves?
For Summer, a pair of leather fingerless weightlifting gloves.
For cool weather, a pair of full-fingered A.T.V. gloves.
For Winter, I use my old leather gauntlets... from my motorcycling days.

Again, none of my gloves were designed for bicyclists!
