As we have been approaching Spring and riding season, I thought it was time to overhaul my S30 to get it ready. One big change I was considering was to replace my Volae Carbon Comfort seat with the original Cruzbike carbon seat. After running into a rotator cuff injury and a recognition that me shoulders were too rounded forward, I thought it might be good to try to lay back more with my upper back and shoulders. The CB seat provides that seating position.
I thought I'd show these updated pictures in this thread since it is already showing examples of S30s. Anyway, I made a bunch of changes for a variety of reasons, and here is what I've come up with for this year:
The major changes were;
1 - Replaced the FSA Gossamer 152 mm (shortened) crankset plus a 39t mid-chainring by Rotor (oval) with a Lightning carbon 160mm crankset and a 40t CX1 Q-ring. Couldn't leave the nice Lightning crank laying around!
2 - Removed the TRP Spyre disc brakes and installed SRAM Force rim brakes. Have never been overly impressed with the feel of the Spyres and wanted to try rim brakes since they've been impressive on my Volae.
3 - Installed new FLO30 wheels with disc or rim brake capability. Needed rim brake wheels and these were on sale. Also mildly curious if even modest aero wheels matter.
4 - Remounted the original Cruzbike carbon seat, but added an S40 extension to increase the seat pan and discourage sliding off the front. Also stiffened the upper half of the seat by using insulated clamps to secure the top of the seat to the headrest bars - the carbon seat has always had holes near the top for presumably this reason.
5 - Added a Cruzbike S40 seat cushion
6 - Drilled new holes in the seat to mount a bottle cage further up on the right side (to avoid hitting the brake cable); and mount a bottle cage further down on the left side.
These changes provided a sizable weight loss, which has been a coincidental bonus. Without accessories (lights, computer, rear bag, and headrest) the S30 came in at a svelte 25.4 lb. In contrast, my earlier setup shown in the earlier post in this thread weighed about 29 lb without the seat bag and no lights.
I've only been able to put in 40-50 miles on the new configuration so far. It obviously feels different due to the more laid back shoulder geometry. I think I am getting used to it, but need more time to be able to forget about it completely. The S40 seat extension has transformed the seat for me. Without it, I never felt comfortable on the S30 seat and always felt like I was sliding off the front. Totally unscientific impressions from speed gained rolling down known hills in town suggest the bike is running 5% or more faster than the earlier configuration. I assume that's mainly due to the more aero seating position?
The S30 has been a fantastic long-distance road bike for me, and I hope these changes continue that tradition!
