In my continuing search for an entry level electronic 2x shifting system for my S-40 my local shop suggested I look into SRAM’s Rival suite of components. From what I’ve learned so far, SRAM is well known and respected for their product line of bike components. Does anyone have experience or knowledge of this line of products, in particular, the Rival suite (AXS E1 front & AXS E1 12 speed rear with max 36T derailleurs.)
I didn’t realize the extent of the conversion. Initially I thought all I needed was to replace both derailleurs. To my surprise electronic systems are incompatible with mechanical ones. Essentially the complete drive train will have to be replaced if I proceed. I’m thinking once completed it will be a welcome upgrade.
Looking forward to constructive opinions.
Thanks,
SJL
The hierarchy for SRAM is Red, Force then Rival, and the Shimano equivalents are Dura Ace, Ultegra and 105. I use SRAM Force, but I think Rival is every bit as good, just a tad heavier. But yes, you'd need the AXS shifters as well. As for the rear derailleur, there is a short cage (33t limit) and a long cage (36t limit) for the cassettes.
Cassettes
Sram 12-speed cassettes have a 10t as the smallest, while Shimano 12-speed cassettes have an 11t as the smallest, meaning your top speed is going to be faster on SRAM cassettes. I use a Shimano 12-speed 11-34 on my short cage rear derailleur, and an 11-36 on my long cage rear derailleur without any issues at all other than keeping an eye on chain length depending on which chain ring I use (a 52t, 54t or 58t).
Wheels/hub
SRAM and Shimano hubs usually cannot be swapped on your wheel, and the cassettes are
NOT interchangeable. If your wheels already have a Shimano hub (11-speed), then you must use a Shimano 12-speed cassette. If your wheels already have a SRAM hub then you must use a SRAM cassette.
So, check that also because you might find yourself having to buy a new set of wheels with the proper hub also. Maybe it is just my location, but SRAM cassettes are much more expensive than Shimano, and since my wheels are old and came with Shimano hubs I lucked out in that.
Another piece of information is that a Shimano 12-speed cassette will fit on a Shimano 11-speed hub. SRAM's and Shimano's old 11-speed pull ratios were not the same so you couldn't "Mullet" (interchange) them to work, but SRAM's and Shimano's 12-speed pull ratios are the same. So the both's rear derailleurs will move the exact same distance for each gear up or down the cassette regardless of brand, making them work perfectly together.
