Sounds like the perfect use case for a road 1x setup. You mentioned that you "did not even notice the slight larger gaps in the middle gears from this change". Did adding the Wolftooth cassette expander with 49T large cog affect the middle cogs at all?Doesn't it just slot in at the back of the cassette?

Hi Jack,
The Wolf Kit takes the Shimano 11-42T cassette and replaces the 17T and 19T cassette gears with an 18T gear, which then makes room to add the 49T granny gear. Its bigger than my 160mm front disc brake rotor!

So the spacing changes from stock: 11, 13, 15, 17, 19, 21, 24, 28, 32, 37, 42
to Wolf kit modified gearing: 11, 13, 15, 18, 21, 24, 28, 32, 37, 42, 49

So just a little wider spacing in the middle, like I mentioned.

P.S. I had to take one of my tubeless tires to the LBS also to get it seated, no issues getting them on the rim, but could not seat them without a compressor. They are Michelin Protek Urban tubeless tires.

If I were building a touring S40 ... oh, wait, I am building a touring S40! 2x, 11-36 XT cassette (340g vs the SRAM 1230 11-50's 615g's, at half the cost), Shimano CX-70 FD (90g), 44/28 chainrings on a 155mm crank.
Good info @velocio, I don't have the depth of experience to suss this many tricky numbers! When mixing and matching components, it is good to know if a 155mm crank will fit straight on the chainring combination of choice. Speaking of which, if I liked 2x oval chainrings, could I run an Absolute Black 46/30T or 48/32T oval with 155mm cranks? For that matter, how much does crank length impact on the overall performance, given that I wouldn't be considering anything longer than 165mm?

@ChaleJake Thanks for the Q559 info! I certainly have plans for mine and your setup has set me thinking, but I will elaborate on them on the other forum... except to say that I am experimenting with a 2nd boom/riser bracket + spacer to raise the boom up the energy sapping stick a little while lowering the handlebar mount to meet it, to try to remove some of the inherent twist when pedalling uphill. If I use a good dropbar I can reverse the stem and still keep a straightish arm while maintaining knee clearance. Your 1x11 setup looks good too...my next project in the queue!

@3bs - I appreciate the tyre recommendations. My LBS guru is a Shwalbe fan too so I will have no trouble convincing him when I order tyres.
