I will be building a new bike pretty soon. Sram apex compact 158 cranks,Sram apex brakes and ultegra shifters and derailers, Cruzbike wheels. The cranks were done by Mark Stonich. Jack

It is time....

Ordered my Silvio 2.x today. Finally, the lonely box of parts on my work bench will stop yelling at me to buy them a proper frame. Good thing there is 2ft of snow on the ground or the waiting would be unbarable.

Bob, be sure to let us know

Bob, be sure to let us know how it does with your neck and back. I haven't seen any posts from Lisa in a while but I'm sure she will be interested in your experience.

Oh, and we like pictures!

Eric,
At the pace I will be

Eric,

At the pace I will be building it; the plan is to take tons of photos and potentially create a detailed build thread so all of you can tell me what I am doing wrong, and maybe help the next person to come along. The existing build threads for the Vendetta and Silvio, helped me a ton, but I still have not found the details my brain craves for the Silvio. I also wound up in a unique place with final component selections which others might find interesting. Example: I went with the newest Red Yawning FD to ensure the best possible shifting on our very short, but sudden and steep hills (will it live up to the advertising?), but I matted that with a much more cost reasonable Rival Crankset. To that I added rings at 52/36 on a Compact 110 BCD and a Wifli 11-32 back to better align the gearing for the hills. That gives me overlapping GI from 44-80 a low of 30 and a high of 126. We will see what happens when the math meets the road.

I have repaired my bikes for decades, yet this will be the first complete build and I have a lot to learn, not to mention out-of-date knowledge to augment. (Next up: learning about current thoughts on grease).

I will have the local bike shop face and chase the BB for me since I do not have a tool for that. But the rest I am currently planning to do on my own; I always wind up fixing the bike shop work for weeks after delivery so why not just do it myself. There is a small chance we might build it at the LBS. The manager is intrigued by the bike; and might give me winter shop access so he can observe, learn and help. If he likes it he might want to get involved in this "MBB thing" as he called it... (come on in kid the water is fine)....

As for the neck this should be as optimal as I can go. In the end I went with the Silvio to combat the neck injury. We already know that the seat angle is really good for me on the Catrike 700; while the regionally lousy chip seal roads should be nicely dulled by the Silvio's suspension. Ultimately I did not go for a Vendetta out of the gate because the 700 can be a big rough at times and I suspect the Vendetta might as well. They do seem determined to ruin all the roads around here. I also scored some wonderfully nice 2013 Bontrager XL Race Lite Tubeless wheels on ebay that should further smooth out the ride and improve traction. I will definitely inquire about the those Air Pouches John was testing with the Vendettas

Sadly the first 2-3 months while we are buried in snow will likely be about tuning the components on the trainer and removing ounces from the engine to save on component costs. So the neck findings will have to wait; however I will supply plenty of component/build porn in the meantime once everything gets here.

SRAM Force FD with yaw rules!

Good choice on the SRAM Force FD with yaw. It costs half of the Red version and the 2014 model (which I ebayed from Taiwan) is functionally identical. Take a look at my thread re FD shifter cable: http://cruzbike.com/mechanic-didnt-get-cable-run-and-rigged-front-derailleur-routing
It's not well documented and counterintuitive that one should simply loop the housed cable around the small diameter of the BB. But as John Tolhurst concludes it's the way to do it.

Sounds like fun Bob. I'm

Sounds like fun Bob. I'm surrounded by snow now too but have been hitting the KICKR pretty good this month. I'm working on getting used to a higher cadence and slowly building up an approximation to FTP training - basically doing two hour rides at pretty good cadence (but no cadence measures - another story) such that I hold a 25mph average or higher. Using Erg mode on my KICKR, I started at 120 watts for a week, now I'm doing 130 watts, next week is 140 watts, etc. Right before Sebring I should be holding 190 watts for 2 hours and might get in some 2 hour 200w rides before the race - we'll see how it goes. I'm participating in RWGPS's Pre-Resolution Challenge for 80 minutes per day but have bumped that up to 2 hours so I can also submit time for the UMCA's Indoor Challenge which requires a minimum of a 2 hour ride to participate. So far I've done 432 miles in 17.8 hours but of course that is at pretty low power levels.

I didn't bother to face and chase my BB shell as it seemed rather pointless to me. I bought a tube of ParkTool PPL-1 grease and slapped some in the BB threads and the appropriate spots and the BB assembly itself and just torqued her down to spec.

My Vendetta was my first ever bike build so I just went slow and took lots of pictures and spent a lot of time with Google reading about various aspects of bicycle assembly and tuning. Pestered John and Jim and others with some questions too. This was my main reason to document my Vendetta build as I found it really wasn't that difficult and hoped it would help others and encourage some more sales - these a cool machines...

I think you are really going to like the Silvio although I have found the Vendetta does absorb some of the harshness of crappy roads.

Good luck with your build.

So sad....

A little cold day entertainment at my expense.

So I get this shipping notice that something is coming from Taiwan and to be available to sign for it.

Sweet, must be the Silvio.

Get really busy and never had time to even look at the tracking info. Next day rush to the door to answer; sure enough it is DHL delivering the KMC chain I had ordered for the Silvio about 5 days earlier; apparently it came from Taiwan too.

Back to waiting.
