Silvio compatible trainers

HI there,

I just ordered a new silvio today. It should be arriving in a week or so and then comes the fun of building it up. After that I hope to take advantage of our Canadian winter weather (I live in London Ontario which is 2 hours east of Detroit) and begin to built up my bent legs using a trainer. Come the spring then I will have the joy of working on my balance and coordination. Last time I rode a bent (only for a block or two) I felt like a complete uncoordinated spaz. I thought I could just jump on it and away I would go - no such luck. Having read so many posts on this site I know that I have a steep learning curve to to overcome with but will deal with that in the spring.

So I am looking for suggestions as to which trainers (not super expensive ones) are compatible with the Silvio.

Thanks for any and ll suggestions.

Congratulations on the

Congratulations on the purchase of your Silvio.
I think most trainers would accept a Silvio so keep an eye on kajiji and Craigslist for something close by. Like most things in life you get what you pay for. A used Kurt Kinetic might cost $225 to $250 but it will last a lifetime. My first trainer was $50 and it didn't last 6 months.

Go Kinetic

I had problems with the Cyclops, securely fitting the skewer side into the slot they have. The Kinetic trainer does not suffer this problem but it's important to place the skewer in the up position to minimise the risk of the skewer rolling out. The essential problem is that the trainer skewers are not long enough for the Silvio so you have to use the skewer that comes with the bike but this isn't really shaped for a trainer slot.

Kurt Kinetic works for me

I agree with Mick & Drew above as I use a Kurt Kinetic with great success. Also note Micks comments on the skewer issue. The Silvio front skewer is longer than the one provided with the trainer so the correct adapter must be configured on the trainer. http://www.kurtkinetic.com/accessories-cone-adapters-c-8_54-l-en.html
The adapter that I use is the part K slotted cone cup. My trainer, which I bought on ebay, came with this one along with one of the cone cups part N and a cone type skewer for 130 (road) or 135mm (Mountain) standard bicycle rear hubs. So I use part K with the Silvio and part N and the cone skewer for mounting a standard diamond frame bicycle. One of the plastic blocks for the rear wheel is recommended to level the bike out. Enjoy the Silvio and be diligent when it comes time for road work. It sure is different than a regular bike.
All the best from Alberta

Thanks for the feedback.

My LBS actually has Kinetic trainers on sale this week and so I will be picking one up tomorrow. I still have to determine which wheels to buy and whether to go with 700x25 or 700x28. I hope to put fenders on the bike so the 25's would be the bet for that but this old body might like a little softer ride available with the 28's. I am presently riding with 32's on my Slasa casseroll.

Hi Dave,

I've never ridden a Silvio, so use that to weight this answer:

I generally prefer wider tires than narrower ones in case I'm riding on crushed limestone or whatever, so I do understand your desire for 28s. One thing that suggests that the 25s might be o.k. is that the Silvio has full suspension, so that should help you out.

Someone recently posted how they get full fenders on with 28(??) tires. It took them some ingenuity and elbow grease, but the bike in the picture looked very nice.

Cheers,

Charles,

Yes I had seen the pics of the 28's with the custom made fenders. The builder actually sent me some very god detailed pics of his install so I am ready to go if I choose the 28's. I think that the 25's with the crud(?) fenders has a little cleaner look butI have all winter to decide what direction to go in.

Tire size

Dave: Charles is correct about the suspension on the Silvio. Don't get wide tires for a plusher ride as the suspension does that quite nicely. I run 23's and a properly pumped up front end and the rear sprung bumper soak up road bumps beautifully. The odd off road excursion (intended or not) is also well within its capability.

slvio

Thanks once again for all the input.

I have my Kinetic trainer in the basement read to be unpacked this evening. I will be heading over to my LBS tomorrow to finalize the drivetrain parts (am going with the Ultegra triple set-up) and ordering in some Origin8 gary bars. I have decided to go 700x25 wheels and tires and the mud crud fenders for a simple and clean install. I can always change over to 28's later if I feel the need. Another question with respect to wheels and tires.

Has anyone gone tubular on the Silvio? I think I am staying with clinchers but a mechanic at a different bike shop almost had me talked into tubulars yesterday. I know from my reading that there are those that swear by them and those that swear at them but was curious how they might do for the silvio.

Hi Dave,

I still use clinchers, but I'm old and set in my ways... :) As far as I can tell, there's nothing particular about the Silvio that changes the arguments for clinchers versus tubulars. And as you pointed out, those who use them really seem to prefer them.

Cheers,
