SRAM 1x

Not sure if this thread belongs here or elsewhere, but I'm very curious what people here think about SRAM 1x. Realizing I could use a 50 tooth chainring and the 10-40 cogset and have a wider gear rannge than I have now with no FD to deal with has me intrigued. Even though I have no problems setting up a Front D it still seems like, you know, one less thing to do and keep up with. Anyone have experience with it? Is it worth the initial effort? Can it be implemented with existing cranks and ordinary chainring or does one have to use the 'official' 1x crankset, whether Rival or Force? I'd rather use Rotor ring and my short cranks if compatible; if not compatible it's a non-starter. Of course it would mean new RD, cassette, chainring andselling the other stuff, but, well that's why ebay was invented. Also trying to find out if my wheels are compatible with any of the XD Driver bodies.
Of course I live in a state with no mountains and I don't plan on doing any HooDoo type climbing or it wouldn't be attractive.
Anyone with experience or insights jump on in. Pros and especially cons welcome.

I've run XX1 on my Mtb all year and it preforms perfectly. I was considering an 11 speed setup on my vendetta since the race I'm preparing for is rather flat and I wont need a wide range. Then when I look at it, the reason we go single chainring on the mtbs is to de-clutter the left side of the handlebar and free up weight and space for dropper post levers and remote suspension lockouts. On a road bike where the shifter is fully integrated into the brake you'll only be saving a little weight with ditching the FD and second chainring. It should also be noted that the X1 setup will have noticeably larger jumps between gears. The jumps aren't a big issue in the dirt where the trail is ever changing and you stand up and move around a lot on the bike. On the rare occasion I have to bit a long section of road on my mtb I find myself shifting back and forth a bit because I wanted on more gear but it jumps to much and I can't maintain my cadence so I drop back down and try spinning faster then I'd like. Another thing worth noting is when your in your largest two cogs and especially your largest it can get a little grindy with the noise. This happens to other peoples bike generally and not mine because I clean my drive train a lot but during my 24hr races when things just can't help but get dirty I've heard my low gears talking to me. You will need to build a new wheel with a XD driver unless the X1 setup doesn't require it like the XX1 and X01 do. You'll want your front ring to sit at I think 52mm from center for optimal shifting and reduced drag so a new crank may be better.

On my Silvio I have XX1 freewheel and Race Face 44t wide-narrow chainwheel and Rival 165 cranks. I like it. Range is almost as big as the Rohloff on my Grasshopper. I wanted to avoid a chainwheel-dérailleur.

I have a White Industries hub and their XX1 compatible freewheel driver body. Both were really hard to obtain.

I thought the driver body would not fit on the hub. It would not push on. As I turned the nut the driver body gradually slid on. Made to sub-millimetre tolerance.

Right you are, 10-42. Do you get the grindy noise in your lower two gears like Rojo was talking about or is that more likely on a mtb? What about the jumps between gears? Ok on the Silvio?

Man, that looks interesting. With a single 42T chainring and that 10-42 cassette, I could get the same gear range I have now with my 50/34 compact double and 12-36 cassette. The jumps in the middle 5 or 6 gears would even be the same as what I have now. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately for my pocketbook), I don't think an 11-speed cassette will fit my Silvio 1.5.

It might not. But...the drive wheel I had on the 1.5 was for 9, 10, or 11 speed. There was a spacer for my 10 spd cassette to fit on the 11spd compatible free hub, which fit the Silvio with no problem. If I remember correctly someone on this forum and maybe several talked about using 11spd on their 1.5's. So it might be an option if your free hub is 11spd compatible. Plus, to use that particular cassette series your hub would have to be one that the XD driver body could be mounted on. The far more knowledgeable bike folks on here would be a more reliable source of info for you about that.

But the whole concept is attractive. Rojo brought up some good points to consider from the 'con' side, while bladderhead likes it on his Silvio. I'm not jumping aboard just yet but I'm definitely intrigued. If getting the chain line right means having to replace my cranks with the SRAM 1x cranks which would then have to be sent to be shortened, etc etc.....the whole idea may be a non-starter. I hereby move we appoint a committee to study the matter further ;)
But if bladderhead will tell us whether he used the Rival1 cranks or just the plain Rival cranks that would be more good info :)

Mine is Rival without the 1. The chain is straight in 7th gear. First gear makes noises, but never has it jumped. Sometimes I think I might use spacers to move the chainwheel sideways.
