SRAM AXS mountain drive on S40

Does anyone have any experience with the SRAM AXS mountain drive , etap road briefters mounted on an S40? I am contemplating changing my 9 speed set-up to SRAM 12 speed electronic dirvetrain but still no input on how it would work on a recumbent and specifically on Silvio. As I am prepping for Paris Brest Paris would have to make that decision quick in order to have enough time to accumulate my own experience with the system if I decide to switch.
Thanks,

I personally do not have experience with the SRAM AXS. However, I talked extensively with the shop that built my S40. The only thing that would be required that is not stock would be the break lines. An extra long break line is needed. Everything else should be stock. Given that you are looking at the electronic shifting, you should have no problems with setting up the front and rear derailleur (all wireless). When I get the cash, I am looking at upgrading to the SRAM Force etap AXS system. That will help me tremendously. This past Tuesday I topped out at 43.8 mph and a PPM of 143. I need higher gearing than the stock 1x. =)

It should be noted you need a full length 2000mm hydraulic brake line to fit a Vendetta not sure if the S40 is much shorter. Also even a brand new out of the box rear hrd brifter will come with a hose that is cut to like 1900mm which is like 1-2 inches too short so you’ll need to install a new hose straight away.

Can you run a double front gear on the s40? I haven’t looked very hard in the forums, and haven’t seen anything on the website
Yes, there is a stalk to mount a derailleur on - though some have commented that some sizes of chainrings fit better than others, and others suggest possible improvements to mounting angle an location of the stalk for future model years.

Hi Casey,

Yes you can run a double front gear ; I have a Shimano deore with a 40 oval ring and a 26 smaller chainring. To make the system work you would need and adapter to lower the deraileur as close to the big radius of the oval. Shifting comes with all shortcommings of oval rings (need to learn to time it) but definitely has advantages for climbing over the round ring. Moreover, for less performant climbers who still dare to tackle a 15% or more the small chainring comes in very handy . Did not think that the SRAM one ring solution is a one-for -all type of oslution therefore I kept my two front rings set-up.

Hey RFB,

What "adapter" did you use to lower the braze-on FD? The FD area is on the short list of disappointments about my 1'st year S40. The rear disk brake routing is another ... As for gearing, eventually I'll be looking to set up a 46/30 or 44/28 double and have read the issues various folks have reported using a large ring smaller than 50.

Cheers,

-Jack
