Sticky Bottles stunned the world with an improbable victory over their faster, stronger, and more numerous rivals, the Cruzbike Chicks, in the 317th running of the WTRL Team Time Trials. The Chicks are surely left wondering: What will it take to finally break the Sticky streak?
The day looked promising for the Chicks. Low Drag, still missing in action since their last Chick-whipping, were nowhere to be seen. Lacking their fearless leader, High Speed couldn’t assemble a legal team. The Otto-ittes, Down to just one man — poor Jim P. — who gamely soloed the course. A brave effort, but no one can be expected to face down five Chicks alone.
That left a head-to-head: Sticky Bottles vs. Cruzbike Chicks.
With the streak on the line, Sticky Bottles sent the call out far and wide. But only Cannonball Greg, Redline McGowan, and yours truly make the date. The strategy was brutally simple. Redline would attack the 3 climbs at full FTP+. Cannonball would blast the descents and flats like a man possessed. And me? My job was to hold on for dear life — and talk trash at the finish.
We knew early how it would go as the 1st of 3 KOMs comes at the two-minute mark of the race. The Chicks steal a quick 1:40 off their 5-minute handicap — this one’s going to the wire. Lap two, same thing — another 1:50 lost on the climb. The math isn’t looking great; keep this up, and we lose.
"Come on Cannonball get us around to climb 3 quick"--and he does. Its the last climb and the race is in the hands of Redline and Redline is ready. Record time and the Chicks can't follow. The Chicks only take off 40 seconds on the third climb. It’s over.
One more 4k Cannonball run is left to the finish, we cruise home, waving to our fervent fans, soaking it in. The Chicks are BEAT, another WEEK. The Sticky streak lives on.
Footnote: Despite spotting the Stickies a 5-minute head start, the Chicks placed an impressive 7th overall in their WTRL women’s category — just 8 seconds from 5th place! Incredible effort all around. Bravo!
