Stopping water into Shifter cable ferrule

I had this problem on my homemade bike and I see the likelihood of the same problem on my S40. The shifter cable is vertical on the right arm of the fork and the exposed section allows water to adhere and make its way into the lower part of the cable and likely get trapped there.

After some time it corrods the shifter cable and the shifting degrades.

I decided to put some grease on ferrule ends and the exposed part of the cable and then covered it with a plastic straw especially when cleaning the bike. Any better ideas out there?
