This is a TT race of 4 person team , where the 3rd rider finish is counted as the team position. The bent team decided to go Solo this year as the assembled team were much different. Jon (vendetta) could go with Domes (performer carbon) as they had their 2 wheel bent, but Miles (homebuilt carbon) wasnt ready enough for a paceline while Adam hari (who raced in battle mountain using larry lem's streetliner) had his pedalprix velo. Vosadrian (vendetta) had a niggle, while Paul (Mystique) had some work to do, so the plan to have a 4 person paceline was ruined.
Summary
Team of 4 again this year - Adam, Jon and I repeats from last time with newbie to the track Miles joining us on his homebuilt Carbon Mid Racer
Judging by our practice/warmup laps - Jon and I would ride together at similar pace, with Adam and Miles riding solo at their own individual paces
Again we decided to do 12 laps of long course first which had more climbing while we were fresher, then switch to 12 laps of short course
Start was a mishmash with riders all over the track we got seperated early and held up
Jon and I quickly regrouped and started overtaking teams, we went out hard averaging 39+ but I was huffing and puffing while Jon was cruising and by lap 10 Jon was starting to pull away and we all ended up riding solo for the remainder of the race. This coupled with the gusty westerlies which were getting stronger made us slower than last year as we weren't able to assist each other
Only managed 40-45 down the main straight into the wind when usually we're doing 55+
Adam was getting cramps by lap 11as all previous velonauts here in the past
Thankfully Miles was solid throughout and was our 3rd man across the line so we registered a team result, as Adam eventually had to pull out from exhaustion/mechanical issues
The wind was tough this year - gusty westerlies throughout wouldn't let up which meant slow progress down the main straight and into turns 1 & 2 - usually the fastest bits for us, although wind was a good air brake going into turn 7 (hell corner), I didn't struggle with it so much this year - the reduced speed helped
Wind was sapping my energy, started munching thru a muesli bar and drinking when I started on the short course - last 5 laps was a struggle - was glad to do a cool down lap and head back to the pits to recover
Jon on the other hand was loving it, he finished ahead of me but stayed out there escorting Miles to the end - probably did over 100km all up
Average Speeds. Position.
Jon 37+. 14th
Dome 36+. 19th
Miles 29+. 68th
Adam 28+. 121st
Told the team to hang around for the presentations/prize draws as our odds of winning something were higher than ever, and alas I was lucky to score a Bryton 750 GPS in one of the random draws. Will be donating it to OzHPV 2022 Challenge prize pool as I have no need for another GPS unit.
