Team Results and a big surprise

The smoke is clearing with more details to follow tomorrow but the Jasons ATP team just became faster. The Bees had a breakthrough ride while we have no idea how Larry's team faired. He failed to check in the Cruzbike pit after the race. Reports are in he did get past the start gate tonight! We will track him down and get more info later.

The most exciting news is Jim abandoned the Huskies a bit early due to the arrival of 8 lbs 6 oz Frances, the newest racer in the Parker clan. The little unicorn isn't expected to race for at least the year 2030. Racing on a small Vendetta of course.

Coyotes rolled and the Flamingos flew. More tomorrow.

WTRL - TTT - Herd of Flamingos Race Report
The Magnificent 8

Chantal Dagostino, Bridget Brown, Wendy Lin, Giuliana Falconi, Connie Swinson, Lauren Colson, and me

Following a 3 minute wait in the pen, our little flock gathered up pretty quickly...except one. Lauren’s discord dropped out right around the time that I counted down to the start - she thought there was another minute, and it was a good thing she spoke up and asked! But, a strong rider, she was able to easily catch up with just a 16 second gap.

We tried to run a paceline, but gave up as we headed toward the Zwift KOM and just stayed together. After a bit of a split, we were able to group back up before hitting the banner and cresting over the hill.

Once we headed toward the desert, and a more flat terrain, we decided to get back to a bit less formal paceline - whoever made it to the front got to pull, first up was Lauren, who was quite comfortable pulling at the front around 3.5 wkg, and the rest of us were quite happy to let her!

For the most part the ride was fairly uneventful, with the exception of a few stray riders, one of whom decided to join our group. We politely asked her to leave our group, at about the same time a stronger group passed us which actually helped to throw her off the back and she was unable to catch onto our draft.

Once again, a great, strong ride by all with an unofficial time of 49:11. Thank you ladies!!

Coyotes Race Report
Unofficial Time 50:05.
We had two Coyotes call out this evening so started with 6 and the KOM took a toll of one, the remaining 5 held together to the finish. I wanted so badly for the thunderstorm raging outside to knock out my electricity.

Team work kept the squad together both front and rear efforts to pull each member along the course.

Congrats Michael Brisbin Michael Robinson Antonio Dávila Roy Longcrier Henry Hardy for the clean strong race.

HUSKIES RIDE REPORT:

Ed Phinney
WTRL - Team Time Trial - Herd of Huskies

The team started out a bit light tonight. We lost Jonathan Winn to a family obligation before the race start. And then there were 7

Jim Parker had to jump out of the game but couldn’t get back in. And then there were 6.

We rolled out pretty well and all grouped up before we started increasing the speed. With Cheville at the front we were pacing at 40kmp (25mph) on the flats with the rest of us pulling once in a while to give Alan a rest. Alan Cheville was the team locomotive this evening.

We started out around the volcano with a few bumps but hung together. Along came the Zwift KOM which stretched us out a bit. I believe it was Joel Bard who flew out ahead but waited up so that we all hit the KOM banner at the same time.

It was then a mad downhill to the right then left hand turn to the desert. Somewhere along the way Pete Karwowski had a technical problem and we were forced to leave him by the side of the road. And then there were 5

As we headed for through the slot canyons of Tempus Fugit, Manzano, being the lightest and least overall watts on the team was getting flogged by Cheville’s 300+watt pace. Though we slowed and encouraged him to hop back on, Monx cut us loose and said “Ride On!”. And then there were 4.

The final few miles left in the race saw a bit higher push as we came out of the desert and hit the underwater tunnels. Just one small ascent left coming out...uh....up and over, a couple of rights...there’s the banner. We all throw down as we near the end for a finish of 54:21 (-7)...47:21.

A very respectable time. Great race with some unfortunate losses but it turned out OK in the end. Thanks all!

Herd of Killer Bees ride report June 25, 2020

A full team for a change. Even better, we stayed together in a tight bunch from beginning to the very end. Even with quite a range from heavy to light riders, we kept a good paceline both up and down the hills. Maybe we're getting the hang of this TTT thing.

We welcomed Paul Vance back to the Bees and he had no trouble picking up where he left off. Also new member David Haley was powerful. Together with Scott Kay, they filled in briefly on the front when we were a little slow getting the rotation done.

Thanks to Carolyn Defoore for filling in on calling the rotation near the end as apparently my mike wasn't picking up well enough to be herd (!) by all.

Tamra Roberts, Clifford Federspiel, and Benphyr Knou did their usual strong pulls, keeping our speed up through the entire race. It felt to me like we had a pretty good time, but we'll see what the results say. Overall, we're continually improving.

Team 5 good job tonight and a warm welcome to Derek a first time TTT racer. Solid pulls, tight rotations the whole way and only one dropped rider due to a sticky draft. Looks like 18th place with one more zone to go. Thanks everyone for coming out and we’ll see you again next week.

Up to this date the ATP6 team has not posted a ride report. I will re-post when they do.

Jason's ATP5 Team finished with a blazing average of 42.7 KPH. This was good for top twenty (19th) in the Frappe Division 72nd overall! The team consisted of 3 A category and 3 B category Racers.

Larry's ATP5 Team consisting of 7 B racers averaged 40.7Kph and finished 94th in their Frappe Division.

The Killer Bees all B squad were 24 seconds back averaging 40.4 Kph and 110th in the Frappes. The Bees finished with their entire squad intact indicating a very strong team effort.

The Famous Flamingos continue to get faster each week. This all C team finished a remarkable 35th in the Vienna Division averaging 35.3 Kph. For those of you who don't know the all women Vienna is an open Category Division.

Our Huskies rebounded this week jumping 4 Herd teams making the Herd Latte podium averaging 36Kph.

The Coyotes were stacked with 2 C riders giving the normally all D team extra horsepower. They averaged 34.7 Kph and made the top Mocha 15. This was 4 slots short of a PL invite.

Lots of fun. You have an open invite. Come join us.

I love this quote from Craig who is arguably the strongest rider on my team. For context if you didn’t watch my video, about 2/3 of way we had a rider request to take a 30s pull putting Craig, myself and Derek who were still doing minute pulls off by 30s. My OCD couldn’t handle calling out pulls at the 30s mark instead of even minutes on the clock so I told Craig he and I would each go 75s to get us back onto even minutes. During the race he just gave a quick calm sure but he had other thoughts on his mind :lol

We were doing the same thing on the Killer Bees. We got off by 30 seconds, so I ran a few people on the 30sec mark, then took an extra 15 seconds myself and asked our other big guy to do the same. But by the time that happened we were getting toward the end when the rotation tends to get aa little messed up as the stronger riders get ready to sprint.

My ATP team would have driven you crazy. Each person when told to go to the front could choose 30 or 60 seconds, so it was kind of like roulette not exactly knowing when you were going to pull. At one point I thought I might just pull until we finished so I didn't have to think about it! :)

Did they not announce how long they planned to pull at the start of their pull? your team was kind of the leftover riders so I'm not sure they have a solid teamwork base. I find many team captains don't have the attention to detail of someone like me who considers every scenario.

:lol so I checked out the team 6 video and yeah that was a bit of a mess for someone new to the group who doesn't know everyones name. Having that one rider on coms for like 5 minutes straight gasping about how he couldn't do this or couldn't do that was annoying. I was like "bro just stop pedaling and fall off the back completely or shut it and get on, don't dangle". Your team was more of a no drop as was mine technically but our riders know when they are done and force our hand to drop them.

I insist on wearing not all the same jerseys so we can easily identify who is who at a glance, I know I take my turn after the blue rider or the red rider. This one seems lost on everyone which makes sense because I racing with a bunch of roadies who'd rather look pro than function fast.

Teammates need to dial in their audio so we can communicate. Inversely other need to call out their teammates for bad audio or they'll never fix it.

Assigning rider numbers may not sound as classy as calling out each person's name but when you call rider 3 to the lead, rider 7 knows they have plenty more time before they are up. Jeff doesn't have to remember when Larry if up he still had Ben , Jeff and Greg before he's up next. Plus no one seems to know how to show their damn full first name in game so how the hell am I supposed to know if L. Osland is Lance, Logan, luke or Luna? I've called riders by the wrong name the whole race because all I have to reference is the first letter of their given name.

@LarryOz I'll get you onto my team for next week if you want. I'd suggest watching my video of this week and closely watch my watts in the draft because you'll need as many to hang on. We'd toss you on the end of the lineup at a default 30's pulls until you tell us you can't pull anymore and we'll take you out of the rotation. Honestly, this week was the first in many I was on a team where we didn't have any riders opt out of the rotation and just hang on.

I'm not really having. a problem with names. We just go in the order people are listed in Discord. I have that running on my phone, so all I have to do is look at the list to see who is next.
It was kind of funny, but in this race I quickly had the order memorized and could call people up without referring to the phone. It was only as we got closer to the end when my brain fogged up that I had to refer to the list.

Well my HR is straight to above threshold and never comes down after the first 5 minutes so I need all the help I can get. It's very deceiving how clear and composed I sound when giving instruction on discord, I think it gives my teammates the impression I have more in the tank. I starting to wonder if the mid race inspirational comments I give actually have a negative effect because it makes others feel worse because they think they are suffering more.

It's funny because no matter if I'm leading a Frappe team or just trying to help in an espresso team my power profile looks the same. In espresso, I'm at threshold just trying to hang on and when I pull I'm above threshold. In frappe I'm at threshold trying to stay in the second position and sticking to each new rider as they pull through to prevent gaps and keep the group blobbed and not strung out, then when I pull I'm again above threshold but for 60s instead of 30s.

..We just go in the order people are listed in Discord.
I can see the value in both. For those less experienced with the TTT and who have good audio the alphabetical name is probably more familiar- whereas I can see the number working great for those (like me) who struggle with names the first xxx times we meet people, those whose brains appreciate numbers, and when at exhaustion levels...:emoji_sweat:

I watched it during a training ride just now. Wow, what a consistent, predictable ride. And you can just pass off leading to anyone when you dropped back to rescue a rider, stop the rotation and start it at any point and it just all happens. (We Bees do our best - last time was pretty close and it was reflected in the race time.). My ride was 2 hours so I watched it twice to try to get everything out of your ride. Thank you for sharing it with us @RojoRacing

Most of the little things I do are things I’ve thought of after experiencing things in previous races that caused problems, some smaller than others but no improvement is to small to ignore. It’s in my analytical nature to pick these things apart and perfect them.

On the KOM climb you see how it was impossible to know we were a rider till I got everyone else in front of me because their name flags at the bottom cover each other. I was debating asking Craig to watch the back but by the time I decided I just figured it would be better to act myself and not a moment too soon because Mark was already silently falling off. If I hadn’t dropped back to check when I did, we would have lost much more time or dropped him altogether. It’s always a good idea to set a solid rider to set a pace on the climb and your strongest on the back to encourage riders falling off to push a little harder and drag them back on.

You’ll notice on the climb out of the desert I tell the riders to stay in front of me. It can be hard to judge my pace following on a climb when riders are trying to ease off to fall to the rear most position. If you don’t Tell them, they’ll end up falling off because you’re trying to keep watch of the whole group and they’re trying to ease off and follow you. It helps to make it clear they are too stay ahead of you.

Also you’ll notice when I speak about my own actions I usually call out my own # or name because, “I’m taking over at the front” or “I need to skip my pull” could be anyone if everyone doesn’t recognize your voice.

I too rewatched the whole stream straight after the race on my cool down because once I started watching there were just so my details to pick up on of what the other riders were doing that I missed in the moment. Before I realized it I had watched the whole thing so maybe these video are bad to just put on a spin too on your easy day.

We can try that - I think I could hang on - and I would like a little harder workout than I had last week, but I also don't want to pull the team down if there are 8 "good" riders that want to participate - let me know which way to go - not sure if I should sigh up for what team at this point - so please advise before it gets to late. (I did find working with the ATP team more or a workout than the Bees however if that means anything)
