Testing Product Ideas

Hello All,

Jim gave me a chance to do some development work on a Sofrider V2 that was returned to us. I'm putting it together for Maria, Jim and his brother to evaluate. The ideas may pop up retail sometime, you never know!

The research is around the brakes and drivertrain. I converted the brakes front and rear to 160mm Avid BB5 discs. I made an adapter for the caliper to fit on the rear swingarm using the two accessory holes in the dropout.

The drivetrain research invloved converting the bike to a triple crankset with 155mm crank arms. This required the use of a "Triplizer" chainring, which was a little quirky to fit, but seems to work okay. We've since found a nice 155mm triple crank made by Forza which has a nice tight Q-factor and will work better than the Triplizer. The chainrings are 48-36-24 (sort of the reverse of my figure!) and produce a perfect gain ratio range, as far as dispersion and overlap go. The low gears woudl allow you to climb a stump, though... The triple is sensitive to x-seam, and right now is limited to about 43" or greater. We are considering an offset derailleur mount to allow for shorter x-seams, but this isn't beyond the discussion stage at this point.

I really like the way this bike rides and handles, and I think the black disc-only wheels give it a nice businesslike appearance.

And you guys probably think we slept all winter...

Can you give us the size, measures, specs and stats for that adapter so i can (try) to make one myself and get discbrakes in the back too?

Is the rear disc brake worth it? Doesnt the wheel block and slide most of the time?

No, i was thinking you were out biking.

Hi Doug,
Love your work. with envy. I just wish I had access to a reasonable "machine shop".

I like the rear brake adapter; it looks like there would be space to drill and tap a couple more holes in the rear dropout and still have the other holes available for whatever they want to be used for. There certainly appears to be enough "meat/metal" there to not weaken anything with a couple more tapped holes above the others. (Although the view of the dropout on the other side of the bike (in the next photo) there looks to be not quite so much room. Photos can be deceptive at times. The angle of the dangle, parallax, etc.)

Did you have to modify anything for the front brake mount or was the mount there already?

I went to Photobucket and, I have to say, the photo of you and Tom(?) on the tandem recumbent looks exciting. Was that a charity ride?

Regards,
John R.

Hi John,

The front brake setup is all there from the factory, just bolt it up and go. I think Alan in Oz has a front disc on his SR also.

Yes, that was the MS150 in 2005. That pictue was snapped with me venting some frustration into the pedals entering a rest stop; we were probably going about 26mph (which is real work on that thing).

People kept going by saying "he's not pedaling" to which I would respond "tell me!" because he weighed 60lbs at the time, and the bike weighed 60lbs in touring trim. Several suggested I wire his Gameboy to the pedals so it only worked when he pedaled. It was still enormous fun, and the main reason I have been looking for a way to build a Cruzbike Tandem from a kit. I would really have liked to have some arm input at several points on the course. Tom raised $10,000 for the charity that year, he was 4th overall in fundraising. The next year I couldn't get him to ride at all. Oh well...
