Entering the Zwift room and booting up the computers, I could feel the energy buzzing. Scotty the Squirrel was grinning on the screen, and—shockingly—my legs felt good. Trust me, at 71, legs never feel good.
The Cruzbike Chick message board had been cackling all afternoon. They were fired up. High Speed had waved the white flag and left poor Otto stranded in Tampa—teamless. Too many beatdowns, I guess? So the Chicks pounced, scooping up the overall 12-hour Bronze winner from Calvin’s Challenge as their newest hired gun. Not a bad move, really.
I think, sure, go ahead, take Otto. We’ve got a four-minute head start and five riders signed up. That fifth rider makes a big difference in keeping pace—something we've sorely missed with thinner teams. Come join us, people!
The course: Neokyo All-Nighter—just shy of 25 km, covering nearly every twist and turn in the city, including the Rooftop KOM. Lucky for me, Connie’s racing right next to me, which means I get to spy on her positions and hear the Chicks' chatter as well as my Sticky teammates. And I can tell you: both teams came out swinging. No slackers tonight.
Let's jump to the exciting part. The Chicks make the catch right at the 18 km mark—smack at the base of the Rooftop KOM. Six kilometers left. The Stickies respond: one massive pull launches Greg into the passing Chicks’ draft just in time. Now all he has to do is hang on through the climb. If he crests with them, he can let gravity and that classic Sticky Bottle weight advantage do its thing on the downhill.
And it almost works.
The Chicks top the KOM with a tiny two-second lead. They’ve climbed, pulled, and fought like a machine. Liz, Emily, and Connie are glued together. Otto? Absolutely brutal—keeping the pace relentless.
Four kilometers to go. Greg’s not breaking away as planned, no way—he’s in hang-on-for-dear-life mode! The Chicks are flying, team racing like they were born for it. It all comes down to the last 25 yards. Greg slingshots out of the draft like Mark Cavendish, surges ahead, passing everyone… but Otto.
Otto takes it. By .063 seconds. That’s 63 hundredths. All five riders cross the line inside half a second! Otto first, Greg takes the team win for Sticky again! Pure chaos. Pure racing. Pure fun to watch—and even more fun to be in it.
Footnote:
How good was Greg’s ride? He had to set a five-minute PR to pull it off. And when you’ve got five solid years of Zwift data, like we do in the CVRT, you know how rare that is.
We're heading into the summer slowdown. Join us. Keep the fire burning. Just try it. You’ll be hooked.
