If you're talking about the packing between the fork leg and the conversion plate, I used 1/4" rubber. It's OK, but not great. It compressed down too much and, perhaps not uniformly. I only have about half my brake pad grabbing the rim and I've never been able to get my shifting to index properly. This is an area that pays to take a little extra time. I think a shoe heel between 1/4" and 1/2" would be about right for my application. If I could get something uniform like that and then take the time to make sure my casssette lines up properly with my derailleur, I could probably get some better shifting. As it is, I'm using bar end shifters in friction mode and even then, there are some gears that are just really tricky to shift into. I'd probably be more on top of getting it right if I really thought I was going to stick with this frame for my touring/commuting bike. It's just too heavy to be practical for me.

No, I've tried various fixed mirrors on other bicycles and never been particularly satisfied with them. I prefer an eyeglass mounted mirror. No need to turn my head, just a flick of the eyes and I can see clearly what is behind me. I prefer the Take-A-Look mirror to the cheaper plastic ones. It's one of those simple "why didn't I think of that?" ideas; you see a million of them around here. They are well made; you'll probably lose it before it wears out and you can get a helmet mount adapter, if you desire.
