You'll see like 20-30 riders all within 5 seconds of each other and then me the next guy back but by a solid 3-4 mins
and were talking about slightly DH segments where I hold the advantage. Anyone else have their local favorite ride poached by a pro tour or solid local road race series?
funny you should mention that Jason.
Here is a conversation with someone over near Raleigh. I stole some KOM's from him that were about 4 years old!

- Rouler 365 A five mile ride w 2 KOMs? That so lame dude
- Larry Oslund I stopped and started my Garmin several times to check my intervals. Total of about 150 minutes road time. Check my other rides from today.
- Rouler 365 Right on man. Strong riding!!!

- Dave Dixon Yeah Larry you shouldn't be able to get a KOM unless there's at least a century on each side of it.
- Morten Tietze He he.... Well done!
- Larry Oslund Thanks - haha - Good Point Dave - local rules must apply - some are more stringent than others! Heck - around here many guys go mountain biking then leave their Garmin on while they drive all over kingdom come - taking dozens of KOM's in the process!
- Rouler 365 Unfortunately there is no strava etiquette for KOM's. The segment(s) you took were the result of our TNW (Tuesday night worlds) group rides. Not likely anyone could "solo" those segments on a traditional road bike. Motorpacing, group rides, recumbent and TT bikes definitely bring higher speeds to the segments but at the end of the day it's all for fun and a little prestige
- Larry Oslund Very interesting information Rouler. Thanks. Most would say KOM's should be individual efforts un-aided by any motorized vehicle, or even a group. But obviously you can't stop Strava from recording anything and everything, but at least we can flag something that was obviously recorded in a moving vehicle. What is also interesting is both our efforts where approximately the same power 285'sh so we were both working basically as hard as the other. Only thing we don't have for comparison is watts/KG.
- Rouler 365 Agreed and to put things into perspective I was riding in a paceline of four or five pro am racers and we had a great tailwind pushing this along, everyone sprinted for the sign just before the railroad tracks and somehow my time came in three seconds faster. All of our local roads are group ride KOM's with the best racers in the region contributing to the pace
- Rouler 365 I was riding at about 4.3 w/kg
- Larry Oslund Rouler: There was no tailwind for me, and I rode and took the KOM in the other direction. Other stats: My bike built out at about 30 pounds, and I was riding at 4.2 2/kg. I also shot full video of the ride and will process it with full data overlay and post to YouTube if you are interested. Next time I am in the area, maybe we can meet and ride some.

It is interesting to me that my conversation with this guy started as he was complaining that I took the KOM's because it was such a short ride. Even though in reality it was not, as I had already ridden for 90 minutes (quite hard intervals actually up and down the same road segments), it seems funny to me that it was OK that the KOM was taken by a him within large group (with 4-5 pro am racers and tailwind) and that was OK, but it wasn't OK if I just went out and took the KOM on a "short ride". Kind of makes me want to look up his name, go back there and try and capture every KOM him and his buddies took with their group ride!
As you can see below it wasn't even a downhill segment: as a matter of fact it was more of an uphill segment. I beat his best time by 18 seconds. (At 29.2 mph that is 770'.) There was only 18 seconds between the next 35 riders.
I'll post the video with data overlays in a day or 2.
Earlier in the day, I took the equivalent downhill segment my 27 seconds. 1 out of 1858!
Faster speed, but OH, that little "hill" at the end was brutal. That little quarter mile sucked my average speed from 32.0 down to 31.5 just like that!
OK - here is a question for you Strava experts: Why was the first "KOM" of mine posted listed as a "KOM", but the seconds one was not. (It has the little golden crown by it when it is in the list, and it shows up as a KOM when listed with "top resuls" for your ride.) The second one was not listed at all, and I did not find it until I expanded all the segments, and "un-hid" it. Does anyone know why that is? It must be categorized as something else?
