Tires for Clyde's

While checking to see if my Rohloff wheel would fit in the Silvio, I noted the fairly tight clearance between my Schwalbe Marathon Supreme (700 x28) and the fork crown so I started looking at other tires online. I came across some really good reviews for the ?Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp tires so started investigating them. Along with the very solid reviews, I really like the color combos you can get with this tire. Given that I have a red Rohloff and will be buying a matching red SON hub, I thought that red/black tires would look pretty sharp.

OK...my first discovery...you can get just about anything in the world in a 700 x 23 but the selection gets much slimmer as you go up in size. In fact, I couldn't find a 700 x 25 ?red/black Vredestein Fortezza Tricomp anywhere on the web although reading somewhere that that size/color was in fact manufactured.

I haven't ridden a bike with a 700 x 23 tire since my early 20s (1970s)...actually that was the last road bike I owned. Given that the Silvio has suspension, 23's might not be that bad but I just can't quite get my mind wrapped around me riding a bike with that skinny of tires.

Curious what the experience has been for the bigger Silvio riders and would also like to hear what you are currently running and your impressions. Thanks for any feedback.

I'm 6'3" 205lbs. - Silvio 1.5 with 700x23

Currently using 700x23 -about 1500 miles- previously had 700x28 - haven't noticed a difference in ride just a little bit less traction with front wheel when starting at times...

Clydes Tires & Wheels

I'm 6'4" and typically 180-190lbs (currently 215lbs). I have built all my wheels in clydale fashion with extra spoke counts etc. I have always ridden 21-23mm tires,... no issues. I just ordered 25mm tires for the Silvio.

I like the Gator tires, which started (I believe) as Specialized Armadillo's (had those, very tough/well wearing tires, that rolled well.

So, basically, I don't think you will have an issue with 23mm tires.

But with two punctures within a week give me reason to think the flat protection isn't as great as I had hoped.

Andrew, I am surprised to

Andrew, I am surprised to hear you had two flats in one week on Gatorskins. I've got Gatorskins on my V, and I had them on my old DF and never flatted on either (maybe 3500 miles combined between them). I've got GP4000's on my SIlvio and have had 3 flats in about 3000 miles. As soon as those GP4000's wear out I'll switch them to Gatorskins.

They do make a "Hardshell" version that is supposed to be tougher.
