Tires for the Quest

I am thinking on buying a 451 Quest.

Is there any problem finding tires for it? I looked at Schwalbe and they only have 20" tires, no 22" ones.

The Quest rim is 451 mm and the regular 20" rims 406 mm. Thus I suppose a regular 20" tire (for 406 rims) won't fit the Quest 451 at all.

Are there tires equivalent to Schwalbe Marathon in 451 size?

451's are listed as "20" tires

Several places sell Schwalbe Durano 20" 451 Road Tires

From:

"20 Inch Sizing Note: There are two sizes commonly referred to as "20 inch" which are not interchangeable.
This size features a 451mm bead seat diameter...."

451 tires

There are a few good road tires for the 451 in the 1 1/8" to 1 1/4" size, but the choices are definitely limited. With the shorter chainstay on the 451 model, you will be limited on tire width anyway due to front clearance issues. An alternative is to swap the 451 rims out for 406 rims if you'd want to run wider tires. A few have done this and run 2" Big Apple tires. I guess it depends on the type of riding you do and whether you ride strictly on pavement, or venture off onto dirt and/or gravel trails and paths. Ideally, I'd like to have a set of 406's with wider tires to swap onto the bike ocassioanlly, but the expense of another DualDrive Hub and the custom building of the rims is a bit excessive for me at the moment.

Tire source (and possible wheel source)

Bike Friday sells a fair number of bikes with 20" tires and DualDrive hubs. You might be able to get a wheel already made up from them.

And they have a selection of both 20" (406) and 20" (451) tires.

Durano 451

I replaced the stock tires (mine were Kenda, I think) after a couple of flats.

All my bikes have flat-resistant tires (Schwalbe Marathon Supremes are my favourites). No Supremes available in 451, so I got the Schwalbe Durano.

Compared to the stock tires, these are lighter, faster, higher-pressure (up to 115psi), but at 100psi they give a harsher ride, even with the front+rear suspension. Great on smooth roads, but for rougher roads, I deflate to 90 or less.

One flat so far in 8 months of riding - I can live with that.
